" Even in the financial sector, the fusion of biological assets and blockchain technology might give birth to new forms of tradable, digital bio-assets, akin to NFTs. And let’s not overlook biosecurity; your biological data could become the ultimate secure form of identification. All of these avenues not only have the potential to improve our quality of life but also create entirely new opportunities for economic investment. As synthetic biology and AI technologies mature, they could deliver an impressive ROI — one not always measurable in dollars, but in a better life — making biology a compelling and increasingly accessible asset class for both individual and institutional investors. But given the complexity of these biological assets, it’s likely that a new breed of wealth managers, specialized in navigating the intricacies of bio-assets, will emerge to guide investment strategies. Overall, biology is not just the science of life anymore. It’s increasingly becoming an important asset class with unique investment opportunities and challenges, warranting its own strategies, risk assessments, and ethical considerations." By the way, this also has major dystopian hellscape elements . . . #financialservices #wealthmanagement

Earlier this year, we launched a pilot funding call for early-stage, visionary frontier bioscience research. We're now pleased to announce 62 pioneering new projects funded through the scheme. By drawing upon unconventional thinking and approaches, the investigators hope to make exciting discoveries with the potential to transform our understanding of the fundamental rules of life. Projects include: 🟣 Delving into the genetic mechanisms behind the regenerative abilities of the ‘immortal jellyfish’, led by Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd 🟣 Exploring the ‘starship’ molecules that may help fungi swap genes with each other, led by of University of Birmingham 🟣 Investigating a theoretical ‘third radical’ molecule that could help explain how migratory birds are so sensitive to Earth’s magnetic field, led by University of Exeter Professor Guy Poppy, Interim Executive Chair at BBSRC, said: “Understanding the fundamental rules of life, such as the principles governing genetics, evolution and biological processes, is essential for advancing scientific knowledge. It is also imperative to societal progress. Many of the challenges faced by today’s society, such as global food security, environmental sustainability and healthcare, are deeply rooted in biological processes. BBSRC is committed to understanding the rules of life by investing in cutting-edge discovery research through schemes like the Pioneer Awards pilot. Our investments are pivotal in expanding the horizons of human knowledge and helping to unlock innovative bio-based solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.” Read a summary of all the projects: https://lnkd.in/egvx3geX

Deputy CEO, Medicon Village Innovation | Life science, digital health & strategy | Keynote speaker and moderator
Glad to see months of hard work and collaboration coming into reality in the form of this year's Life Science Barometer! 📈 It also meant having the opportunity to look into regional naunces to the national results, especially since Skåne is the second-largest life science region in Sweden, representing 21% of life science companies in Sweden. What we found was: 🔎 Among the 820+ companies in Skåne, 560+ belonged to the core life science segments of pharma, biotech, medtech and diagnostics. 🔎 Medtech is also the largest segment in Skåne, representing 43% of companies. 🔎 Skåne has a higher proportion of micro-sized companies, 83%, compared to the Swedish average of 77%. 🔎 In the short term, finding and securing funding was a key priority for Skåne-based respondents (a pattern among micro-sized life science companies in Sweden), while... 🔎 In the long term, leadership recruitment and development is a prioritised area for increased investment after market growth and workforce recruitment. For those curious to find out more, I would encourage you to download the Life Science Barometer from SwedenBIO's website; do watch out as well for a regional report focused on Skåne that Medicon Village will publish later this spring, supported by Sparbanken Skåne.
The Life Science Barometer 2024 is now live! As an annual initiative by SwedenBIO, the Life Science Barometer aims to gauge the pulse of the life science sector. This year's survey boasts record participation from 200 companies nationwide, making it the most comprehensive report to date. The Life Science Barometer 2024, produced by SwedenBIO in collaboration with Medicon Village, Sahlgrenska Science Park, Stockholm Science City, STUNS Life science and Citeline, promises unique perspectives absent in previous statistics. Some key highlights from the report: - Medtech constitutes the largest segment, encompassing 61 % of the life science sector. - Research and development is the primary activity among small and medium-sized enterprises. - The majority of companies are privately owned. - Financing stands out as the most significant concern for companies. Being able to repair myelin is a key step to help stop the progression of MS. Dr. Sally Wheatley and her team at the University of Nottingham are exploring just that. More specifically – they want to know if a protein called ‘survivin’ might affect myelin production. Why are researchers looking at this? A molecule inside cells (called SEH1) switches on genes to kick-start the production of myelin. Researchers think that when the survivin protein binds to SEH1, it could stop cells making myelin. If researchers find survivin reduces myelin production, it may help us find new treatments in the future. Find out more about Dr. Wheatley's research: https://mssoc.uk/4adE10j Dr. Wheatley’s research is funded by our Catalyst grants which give researchers the opportunity to explore new and innovative research projects: https://mssoc.uk/3TmNFGX
