Leah was recently at our amazing client GPC Beverage's AOP (Annual Operating Plan) meeting & she couldn't help but notice that it seemed like practically everyone in the company had been invited. There were SO many people in the room! 🎉 Everyone in the company HAD been invited. 😎 Up until two years ago, the AOP meeting was only for senior leadership. They'd talk about how the company had performed over the previous year, what the major initiatives were for the year ahead. A speaker 🎤 would be brought in, & they'd take time for some professional development. Then a new CEO took the helm, and he wanted everyone at the company to be at that meeting. Even if it was a huge financial investment 💰 to the company. Even if everyone meant "everyone"—managers, team leads, truck drivers, warehouse personnel. The way he saw it, everyone in the company had contributed to the company's success. 🏆 Why wouldn't they be invited to a meeting where they could learn how successful they'd been, or what the company wants to accomplish next year? 💡 This is the meaning of inclusivity—that everyone at your company, no matter what their role or title is, gets the information, & gets the opportunity to be celebrated. When Douglas Conant took over as President & CEO of Campbell's Soup in 2001, he was faced with the challenging task of turning around the company's stock price and transforming what he described as a 'toxic' culture. To improve the culture Conant looked at ways he could instil trust and build rapport with his people. One powerful strategy he applied was handwriting up to 20 notes every day to employees, to recognise and celebrate their achievements. He created a culture where contributions were celebrated. Over 10 years this equated to >30,000 notes. Through his thoughtful actions, he turned Campbell's Soup into an organization known for its supportive and inspiring atmosphere. Skip the can and just stick it to my veins. Diet pop isn’t the only thing that I like about the Pepsi brand. The parent company, PepsiCo, churns out high caliber CEO’s like it does corn chips. I’ll name a few CEO’s who are part of the Soda Mafia: Brian Cornell of Target, Lauren Hobart of DICK'S Sporting Goods, Vivek Sankaran of Albertsons, Mary Dillon of Foot Locker. According to Fortune, PepsiCo cranks out rockstar talent due to an intense focus on identifying and developing high performers. The process is deliberate and systematic. The company ID’s their high-potential talent and throws them in the deep end, so to speak. Talent is challenged, mentored and given room to fail. Also, you don’t have to be in the corporate office to be considered a high-performer….even truck drivers can be identified as one. Oh, and you’ll love this, PepsICo. has an expectation that executives understand the business as a whole. Being confined to one’s own business unit is a no no. That sounds superior to one and done leadership workshops and handing out meaningless certificates of completion. So, why would this matter to you? Liza was quoted in The Business of Fashion article last week discussing the “sales floor to c-suite” pipeline in retail. Specifically, how this pipeline is drying up. This isn’t earth-shattering news given that Fortune, NYT and Forbes published articles in early 2023 about the same topic. But, it does bear repetition. There was a time where future retail leaders were groomed at companies like Lord + Taylor, Abraham & Strauss and Macy's. People were able to work their way up and take on various roles. Here's a clip of my conversation with Greg Creed former CEO of Yum! Brands and the former CMO of Taco Bell. Without a doubt one of the most transformational leaders in both the food and marketing industries. Under his leadership, the Yum! Brands portfolio experienced exponential growth. In just five years, the number of stores surged from 43,000 to an impressive 50,000. Stock prices doubled, jumping from $50 to $100, while sales skyrocketed from 3% to an astounding 8%. Notably, Taco Bell alone saw its annual sales surge from $6 billion to a remarkable $10 billion. Simple The word simple has been in my life lately. During the Savannah Bananas leadership trip, Jared Orton, the President, said we have a simple business and followed up that message with a simple but inspiring presentation. While at the Chick-fil-A Corporate Support Center following that Savannah Bananas trip, we stopped at the Chick-fil-A Restaurants gift shop (I mean, who has a gift shop in their corporate headquarters…pretty cool!). I picked up several books including How Did You Do It, Truett? which I read today. The book mentioned the word simple numerous times and had the message that I wanted to share: “Every day, though, we remember that the Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich is really a simple concept. We take advantage of our biggest opportunities when we keep it simple, focusing on serving great tasting food in a clean, wholesome environment with great customer service.” How can you do a better job to keep it simple for your team members and your partners or clients?
