What is Your Ikigai? I recently discovered the concept of ikigai when I came across the book of the same title. Essentially, ikigai is your meaning or purpose in life. When you figure out your ikigai, it helps you make decisions that enrich your life and give you purpose. It also frames the tough stuff that comes up and puts it into perspective. When you have a larger goal and purpose in front of you, the little hills you have to climb don't seem so difficult anymore. A few years ago, I was striving to be a filmmaker. I wanted to win an Oscar, so I made as many short films as I could and studied screenwriting. But then my focus shifted. I saw my daughter watching YouTube, and the content for kids was awful. One of the biggest channels on YouTube had children engaging in activities that weren't enriching, and they were overly focused on their new toys. I sat down and thought more about what I could do. I could keep complaining, or I could be part of the solution. So, I decided to create Ailani's Little World with my daughter. We explore fun things in the world together. This is my ikigai—to help enrich the lives of my daughter and all the boys and girls out there. To actively try to make this world a better place. Finding your ikigai isn't always easy, but when you do, it makes everything else simpler because you know what is truly important in your life.

Using LLMs for Screenwriting Stage 1: Initial Idea. Often, writers don’t have this initial ideation stage because we rarely start from scratch. Usually, there is some vision of what we want to write. But if you hit a dry spell or just want to have some fun and want to spark some new ideas, try this creative exercise: Genre+Voice. Here’s how it works: 1. Ask for Sub-Genres: Prompt LLM to give you 5 specific movie sub-genres. Instead of broad categories like Comedy or Thriller, get a list of something more specific, like Christmas Movie, Heist FIlm or Body Swap Comedy. If the suggestions don’t excite you, create an interesting list yourself. 2. Choose a Voice: Pick a writer, screenwriter, or director with a significant body of work. Preferrably, someone you know and like. Or ask LLM for a list of those again. 3. Pitch Ideas: Ask LLM to imagine it’s the chosen writer pitching 5 ideas as loglines in each sub-genre. This generates a list of film ideas in that writer’s style. I usually ask Claude to come up with sub-genres and select the Voice myself, because this way I know if the suggested ideas are very close to the original works of this writer. But the reverse can also work: one sub-genre + several voices 4. Reflect and Select: Review the list and see what resonates with you. Most of the ideas will be repetitive and generic or won't really make sense as a story, but some ideas will feel like fun and spark your imagination. Keep those and take them to the next stage of your writing process. #Writing #AI #ChatGPT #Claude #Creativity

Visual Storyteller 🎬 Video Editor, Scriptwriter, Filmmaker | Openly Autistic & ADHDer ♾️ | Multi-Disabled 🦓 | Mental Health & Neuro-Inclusion Self-Advocate
I spent a month pressuring myself to get things done. Squeezed every drop of my brain juice. Exhausted my (already limited) energy. Finally remembered: that’s not how my creative brain works. I took a few steps back. A few deep breaths (also because my brain is often not getting enough oxygen because of #POTS, but let’s skip that). Allowed myself some freedom. Less pressure, more play. I practiced that this week. The result? More progress than I’ve had in over a month! It’s not a coincidence. I need is to find the balance between discipline and flow. #screenwriting update: I can FINALLY see my short narrative taking shape and I got 2 pages down— it might look like too little, but it isn’t. This is going to be a hard one to put to page because we’re dealing with 2 disabled characters, which I want to portrait as authentically as possible. It needs research. It needs thought. It needs empathy. And for a #filmmaking update… I’m ready to cast for my documentary about POTS and will be working on material for the fundraising this week. My webseries is also taking shape (early stages still, won’t rush with this), and I finally made some decisions regarding YouTube channels and content creation. I’ll be working with my therapist on finding strategies to help me and my #AuDHD brain with consistency. It’s all flowing. 💃🏻 Let’s keep trying to find the balance between discipline and flow. #DisabledFilmmaker #screenwriter #ActuallyAutistic #adhdWomen

🇬🇧🔥 FIGHTING THE LACK OF INSPIRATION. ➡️ Like most authors, inspiration isn't something I can summon at will. There is no unlimited access to it. However, I don't sit idly for divine intervention or a sudden burst of creativity before I put pen to paper. Every morning and every afternoon, I commit four, five, and occasionally six hours of writing work, whether inspired or not. Why do I do this? Because I have learned and know that by winning the first battle against my lack of willpower, the creative spark will inevitably follow. On the other hand, my search for inspiration continues after my routine writing sessions. When I'm not actively writing, I "court" inspiration by "working" on it, especially when I have time to be idle. 🖋️This process involves immersing myself in the world around me, such as in a café or elsewhere. This includes observing people's behaviors, oddities, and intriguing situations—all meticulously noted in a trusty notebook that never leaves my side. It's about visiting museums, losing myself in songs, and watching thought-provoking documentaries. In short, it's about nourishing my mind and soul. And then what? 🦋 I then trust in my brain's ingenuity. Having passively cataloged an array of stimuli, it will invariably rise to the occasion when needed, offering fresh insights to enhance a character, create better narrative devices, or add depth to the cinematic landscape I'm attempting to design. 🦋 I greatly advocate broadening one's inspiration muscle; the more time and effort one puts into it, the more likely the creative spark will come. #screenwriting #filmindustry #cinema

Deal your own cards. It occurred to me the other day that I've never told this story before. My entire filmmaking career started with a deck of cards. I was co-running a writer's group while at Columbia University. We were mostly working on fiction and poetry. We'd meet and write for a few hours. Put together one lit mag before the meetup lost steam. One week, it was my turn to come up with a prompt/exercise. So I wrote up a simple structure: - I'd deal cards to the group, until none were left - We'd each sketch out two characters - Then we'd split our cards - And play a short round of war with ourselves Each character would play out their hand. Then we'd write down: 1) Who won each round, and 2) How handedly. Until we were out of cards. I think we ended up with five rounds each. For example... Character 1 lays down a Queen. Character 2 drops a Three. Once the writing started, Character 1 would really get the upper hand for that story beat, as our impromptu plots took their turns. For smaller wins, the stakes were lower or more subtle. Perhaps not a perfect framework, but good enough for getting things moving. The story I wrote that night ended up getting published a few months later. When people read it, they commented on the strong visuals. They compared it to films they had seen, more than fiction they'd read. I mentioned this in passing to an alum I met, who was an indie filmmaker. He and his producing partner kindly offered the use of their equipment, if I ever wanted to do an adaptation. I decided to do it, and they fulfilled their promise. That was nearly 20 years ago, and I'm still making movies. Because I dealt my own cards. Even before I knew what that phrase was going to end up meaning to me. - Motion. - Exploration. - Experimentation. It's not about "what gets you a manager." It's about play, and the chase, and then imbuing those things in every aspect of the doing -- even as you learn to embrace the business side of things. Anyway, I plan to share this story with my screenwriting students next week. Figured some of y'all might get something out of it too. Have a good rest of the week, strivers and survivors 🖖.
