✍ 'Step into the zone of awkward team building and tough presentations – they do pay off' | Writes Helena Morrissey I recently surprised everyone who knows me by joining in an indoor skydiving “team-building” #activity at a company I chair. I should clarify that the indoor version is nothing like actual skydiving – instead of leaping from a plane, I hovered a mere few feet off the ground in a wind tunnel, aided by an instructor. Even so, I was well beyond my comfort zone, nervous about making a complete idiot of myself, especially in front of 25 #colleagues – most of whom I’d only met earlier the same day. But I am so glad I did it. My technique was lousy, but the satisfaction of overcoming my fear, combined with bonding with new (and in some cases, equally terrified) colleagues outweighed any embarrassment. #TeamBuilding antics aside, we need to be willing to step outside our comfort zone at work if we’re to #progress in our careers, whether we’re in our 20s or 50s. This spring, we organized an employee appreciation bowling event that went beyond just celebrating hard work. It was a moment to bring together individuals from various fields under one roof, fostering camaraderie, unity, and healthy competition. In our vast organization, where teams are dispersed across various domains, it's essential to create opportunities for interaction beyond work-related tasks. These events, such as the recent bowling tournament, not only serve as a platform for recognition but also as a powerful catalyst for building meaningful relationships across departments. They are a testament to our commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity and collaboration, where every individual's unique contribution is valued and celebrated. By planning and executing such activities thoughtfully, we not only acknowledge the efforts of our employees but also strengthen the fabric of inclusivity within our organization. I am only now posting about this event because I recently visited our Parks and Forestry Division during their workday and saw the tiny Hulk bowling trophy turned into something beautiful! A team comprised of Park employees won the bowling tournament. They repeatedly told me how much fun they had, and they took their win a step further by making the trophy more impressive and meaningful. So here you have it: A group of employees who somehow keep up with the maintenance of 60+ parks throughout the City of Green Bay are also incredibly creative and thoughtful individuals who created a trophy to be coveted. #EmployeeAppreciation #Inclusivity #Teamwork #CompanyCulture #GreenBayParksDivision

My family and I took a day trip to San Francisco to watch the San Francisco Giants ⚾play against the Texas Rangers. For perspective, we are about 3 hours away by car, train, and foot to the ballpark. It can be kind of a hassle getting there. I had hoped we could take the ferry across the bay to get to the stadium, but the tickets were sold out. Taking the ferry has been on my Summer Bucket List (things I want to do before summer kicks the bucket) this year. Oh, well next year we’ll be more prepared.   It took a bit to get to the park, but the win was seeing our friends from the Bay Area. Fun fact, this couple introduced my husband and I over 19 years ago. The game was so exciting- it went into extra innings and the Giants won with a walk-off homerun by Patrick Bailey.   Besides the win, seeing our old friends was so nurturing. They are the friends that you just pick up where you left off when you see them (you know those kind of friends). This experience reminds me of how to increase mental and emotional wellness when we are busy at work. 1)  Go experience a fun activity. 2)  Meet up with friends you have known for years. 3)  Celebrate WINS. At the end of the day, are you focused on your mental and emotional wellness? What do you do to get more mental and emotional wellness back into your life? At Blue Margin, we challenge the notion that work and personal life should remain separate. After all, “life” doesn’t stop just because we’re in the office, and if a significant portion of our day is dedicated to work, why not make those hours as fun as possible? Our culture is a living testament to this belief. We don't reserve relationship-building and fun for evenings and weekends; they are woven throughout our daily interactions. From our playful Nerf war beginnings to our employee-driven office tournaments, we've always prioritized camaraderie. Events like our March Madness-inspired basketball tournament or the month-long putting competition aren't just about bringing out the athlete in each of us. It’s so easy to get caught up in keeping strict professional boundaries that we can sometimes forget that getting to know your team away from their desk can really help them feel connected to both each other and the team’s mission. You have a hard-working team! But they don’t seem to know each other very well. As a leader, it’s up to you to create opportunities for your team to experience something new together or facilitate ways for them to get to know each other better. When you have a team that knows and supports each other, you have a team that can thrive in even the toughest challenges. There’s a picture that still sits on the shelf in an office showcase… a raft full of people in white rapids. That rafting trip was the first one the office went on and they had to not only conquer the fear of being in the raft but also listen to a guide instruct them while making sure no one was left in the water or fell overboard. The trip started with lots of laughter, both nervous and excited, and was soon replaced with keen concentration as the guide instructed them on how to remain safe as they faced higher-than-normal rapids. Those who were more nervous or scared had to rely on those ready to be brave and act should the raft turn over. The relief as they successfully navigated the rapids and arrived at their destination was shared via high fives and hugs. The picture was proof they did something scary together and it was referenced anytime things got tough on the next project. This type of bonding lives on past the event.
