Senior design teams showcased their innovative engineering projects at this year's 2024 Senior Design Day at Vieja's Arena. These SDSU College of Engineering graduates are motivated to build a better world, from growing plants on the moon and designing non-invasive health monitoring sensors to developing power line wrapping technology to prevent wildfires. "Many [students and alumni] have shared how their Senior Design Capstone experience was their most challenging and yet the most rewarding experience during their undergraduate studies and, in some cases, no less than life-changing," - Professor of Mechanical Engineering Scott Shaffer. Last chance to participate in the survey! Do you have an opinion on institutions using competitions as part of engineering educational activities? Have you taken part in a competition as part of a course, or a sponsored event? Let your thoughts be known and fill out this survey: https://lnkd.in/eC4niv3z We would be thankful if our network could complete a research survey. Devised by Fleur, a final year mechanical engineering student at the University of Bath, their research studies university engineering competition teams and their educational benefits to engineering students. Anyone can complete it: students from any degree, supervisors, sponsors and competition organisers, so please send it round and let’s explore this concept and its outcomes together! #universityresearch #researchproject #educationalbenefits #surveyresponses #questionair #surveyresponsesneeded #engineeringeducationdevelopment #educationdevelopment #studentcompetitions

Honored to serve as one of six professional judges for the Syracuse University engineering invention competition. In this age of digital and exponential change, where everything evolves at a rapid pace, fostering a mindset of intellectual curiosity and the skill set of innovation is crucial. Without curiosity and innovation, new services, products, capabilities, and outcomes won't emerge. I sincerely applaud Syracuse University for encouraging innovation and invention. It is often said that "necessity is the mother of invention," and these engineering students—from aerospace, civil, mechanical, electrical, and biological disciplines—have embraced this truth. Their innovative ideas address real-world needs, helping babies, the elderly, pets, firefighters, parents, and patients thrive in their lives and roles. It's inspiring to witness the next generation of engineers rise to the challenge and push the boundaries of what's possible. Congratulations to all the participants for their hard work and creativity. The future is bright with your talent and vision lighting the way. #Innovation #Engineering #SyracuseUniversity #InventionCompetition #FutureLeaders #STEM #Curiosity #InnovationForChange #EngineeringExcellence

Great news, Triton Engineers: the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering jumped to the #11 spot in the U.S. News & World Report Best Engineering Schools ranking, up from #12 last year. Among public engineering schools in the nation, the Jacobs School ranks #7. “I am thrilled that our school-wide ranking improved this year. I am proud, I am excited – and I am also right back to work,” said Albert "Al" P. Pisano, Ph.D., Dean of the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering and Special Adviser to the Chancellor. “Rankings are recognition rather than definition, and these rankings recognize yet again our world-class school. We advance engineering and computer science research and education for the public good, and it’s wonderful to be recognized as we do this important work.” Included in the U.S. News rankings methodology for the first time this year are citation metrics, a measure of an institution’s intellectual impact. We rank #1 in the nation among public engineering schools for citations per publication, a testament to our world-class thought leadership. Congratulations, and THANK YOU, to all of our graduate students, postdocs, research scientists, faculty, staff, community and industry partners, whose hard work and dedication is reflected in this top rank. We have another article to highlight as part of our April issue! This work is titled "Engineering culture under stress: A comparative case study of undergraduate mechanical engineering student experiences" and is authored by Drs. Jessica R. Deters, Jon A. Leydens, Jennifer Case, and Margaret Cowell. The authors were interested in how the COVID-19 pandemic changed how mechanical engineering cultural perspectives emerged in students. The article can be accessed through the link below! https://lnkd.in/gQ5h8xwW
