Original country marketing 🌎! And what is Portugal's strategy? Dear all, last week Sweden launched a campaign to promote the country, using a funny, curious and original strategy: the confusion made by many people between Sweden and Switzerland (including US President Joe Biden 😅). Sweden strategy: healthy country (nature, peace, modernity) Opposite to the way they present Switzerland: wealthy country (banks, luxury products, traditions) Not long ago Portugal was suffering a similar problem, being confused as a province of Spain. Sweden? Switzerland? All us Europeans know the difference. So why did the Swedish tourist authorities make this ad? In the commercial, a fictional Swedish spokesperson suggests the two countries divvy up which attributes each is allowed to extol in their marketing. Switzerland gets LSD (they invented it); Sweden gets the Northern Lights (a different sort of surreal experience). Seems obvious. Seems pointless. That is, until you think that tourism is a global business. Apparently, there were 120,000 searches seeking the difference between Sweden and Switzerland last year. Some 85,000 came from the US. Have you ever been confused by Sweden and Switzerland? Apparently, there are plenty of folks out there who think Sweden was Switzerland. Or rather, they mix up Swedish attractions with Swiss attractions. So much so that the Swedish Tourist Board came out last year with an excellent campaign to "distinguish" Sweden from Switzerland. I chanced upon this video and I just find it super creative and funny! It is really an excellent way to promote Sweden. And when I think further into it, I ask myself why are there not so many such funny commercials in Asia? Surely, I can't imagine Singapore Tourism Board coming up with such a commercial. It would have been taken down in a matter of days. So, are Asians too serious? Are Asian not creative? Or do Asian tend to take things too seriously? When was the last time you wanted to do some funny and creative and then you gave up on the idea worrying about the consequences? Would you think your idea would have been better received if you were not in Asia, say if you were in Europe or the US? Please leave your comments below.
