Thanks for sharing your lovely insights, Viraj Joshi! May your medium article open up the conversations we all need to have to move from Design Thinking to Design Futures (Thinking?).
Happy New Year! Here's "A Manifesto for Speculative Design Practice": It rationalises my "Evidence > Extrapolation" process I’ve iterated upon over the past few years, so I could have a blueprint for tackling speculation projects in the future. I turned my 2023 retrospective on its head, to make a manifesto for my own practice, so I could look forward and not just count back. It will continue to evolve, but this is a great line in the sand for where my practice is today. https://lnkd.in/eqnNkQ73 #speculativedesign #designfiction #designfutures #sciencefiction

Interesting article exploring how designers have a powerful role to play by empowering people as "prosumers" in the design process. This can facilitate improved living and highlights the potential to create more meaningful and #usercentric solutions. By involving individuals as active participants in the design process, designers can unlock a wealth of creativity and insights. PhD Candidate | Design Researcher on Learning Environments. Monash University. Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture.
✨ I found this post interesting as an architect and interior designer. In architecture and interior design education and practice, we typically learn that humans are at the centre of design process. However, since starting my PhD I have found another method of human engagement: Co-design! Collaborative design means designing WITH people instead of designing FOR people. This approach transforms stakeholders from passive to the active project participants. Through co-design, we intentionally share power, enabling participants to directly engage in thinking, planning and action. As architects, we can go beyond our role as designer and also facilitate this participation. #codesign #humancentereddesign
Co-design, human-centered design. Isn't it all just different words for the same thing? Shifting from human-centered design to co-design was more than just changing our terminology. Human-centered design encourages us to place people's perspectives at the center. We might channel those perspectives at particular points through focus groups or journey maps. But co-design invites the people most affected to play an active role throughout the design process. From the start, it changes the status quo power structure typically held by a designer or a decision-maker. Co-design challenges us to examine the power dynamics and systems of harm that got us to — and continue to perpetuate — these problems. It means ditching neutrality as the assumed starting point for a design challenge. Co-design is about learning from history before we dream up the future. If we can grapple with these things, we're not just producing a short-term solution; we're changing how we think and act along the way. #codesign #humancentereddesign #socialinnovation
