As a part of our work at Climate Local we have explored, much like everyone at the moment, the use of generative AI in fulfilling our mission. Our beliefs in balance, transparency, accessibility, understanding, connectivity, and impartiality of information are core to our mission, particularly in presenting information and seeking inclusivity.
It was these beliefs that offered a moment of pause and reflection in our approach to generative AI. I had questions on sustainability of solutions, considering their emissions and water usage impacts, how we were to remain accountable in development and use, and what bias would these models reproduce, if any, through outputs.
Subsequently in asking these and many more I realised the need for collaboration and framework to address them. It was with this that I decided to setup the Responsible AI for Climate Action (RAICA) Foundation.
RAICA Foundation is intended to be a collaborative platform of forward thinking organisations and individuals facilitating the responsible use of AI in addressing the climate crisis. This foundation operates on the conviction that AI can be a powerful tool, provided it is used ethically, transparently, and with accountability.
My vision is for a future where AI-driven solutions are an effective, sustainable, and ethical tool working toward climate action worldwide. Further, it is my belief that in taking this approach we can all pause, reflect and ensure perspective in the integration of this technology in both society and economy. There are four key functions of RAICA Foundation:
Community Partners: We invite climate organisations and interested individuals to become partners, committing to our guiding principles and actively participating in our community.
Advisory Panel: We connect and collaborate with some of the world’s emerging experts in AI to provide advice and guidance toward our mission and overall vision.
Policy & Compliance: We seek to develop understanding of and develop policy related to evolving legislative and regulatory landscapes on responsible AI use and development.
Knowledge Sharing: We foster an environment of learning and collaboration, sharing best practices and breakthroughs in responsible AI for climate action.
With this announcement, I am making a call to my wider network to contribute to this collaborative effort. Initial initiatives include creating guidance and related frameworks, responsible AI build teams, content writing, and educational workshops.
