Findings from the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness (CASPEH) show that intimate partner violence (IPV) and homelessness are intertwined. Today we released a report examining the connection between these issues. Our new report with Abt Associates evaluates three different approaches to reducing the number and size of homeless encampments targeting unique challenges found in the San Fernando Valley, Long Beach and Los Angeles River Basin areas.      Through the insight we've gathered from outreach workers, government staff and homeless service providers, this report deepens the understanding of best practices for addressing unsheltered homelessness through encampment resolution. We know there is a clear connection between homelessness and domestic violence, or intimate partner violence (IPV). Findings from the California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness (CASPEH) show that among survivors who experienced IPV in the period prior to homelessness, 40% indicated violence was a reason for leaving their last housing an 20% noted it was their primary reason for leaving. Today, the UCSF Benioff Homelessness & Housing Initiative released a new report, Toward Safety: Understanding Intimate Partner Violence and Homelessness, which dives deeper into these IPV-related findings from CASPEH and offers policy recommendations to address these intertwinded issues. 38% of DV survivors will experience homelessness in recovery, and 57% of unsheltered women report DV to be their primary cause of homelessness (National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV). Though odd to say, I was privileged to have been able to drop out of school and work overtime to not lose my housing in the face of DV escape & recovery; had I been a caregiver, or managed more severe disabilities, or didn't have access to 60+ hour week employment, I wouldn't have been able to even begin my long healing journey and ensure my ability to survive & thrive now. A safe & stable home is a human right, impacts countless areas of deep concern, and can & should be afforded to everyone. Today is National Youth Homelessness Matters day & we call on all Australians to join us in making ‘unaccompanied’ children & young people experiencing, or at risk of experiencing homelessness, a priority for our Federal Government. Unaccompanied children & young people (15 to 25) make up nearly 1/3rd of our homeless population- in 22/23 that was 39,000 unaccompanied children & young people either sleeping rough, couch surfing or experiencing unsafe or insecure living conditions. And these numbers ONLY represent the children/ young people who accessed the Speacialist Homelessness Services system. This #YHMD we ask you to help us elevate these children & young people’s voice, validate their experiences & prioritise solutions designed specifically for them through the development of a standalone National Child & Youth Homelessness Plan. The population of adults aged 50 and older experiencing homelessness is growing swiftly. According to a report by the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, older adults encounter serious health and safety hazards. 91% of older homeless individuals in California lost their most recent stable housing within the state, and 48% became homeless for the first time after turning 50. These individuals frequently endure extended periods of homelessness, along with substantial health issues and past traumas. Another facinating meeting with Moira from the Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa today- a member driven coalition of people and over 75 organisations working together to end homelessness in Ottawa. The Alliance work collaboratively to research and understand homelessness, advocate for structural change, and ultimately end homelessness. Interesting to hear that the Alliance have members with lived in experience to ensure that these voices are heard, all perspectives are taken into account and they have equal decision making powers around the table. Homelessness figures are at an all time high with over 2000 people staying in an emergency shelter in Ottawa every night. The family shelter system is more than 350% over capacity and they now have a waiting list to access emergency shelter, let alone housing. It was eye opening to hear that a citizen has to work 70 hours at minimum wage to cover their rent only. Interesting to hear about the work the Alliance are doing with The City to create innovative ways to end homelessnes that does not rely on the increased supply of affordable homes. #collaboration Gower College Swansea Taith Georgina Cornelius

"This worsening tragedy is a societal failure that disturbs the conscience, particularly in light of the profound consequences that homelessness unleashes.... Stabilizing housing for older adults [through prevention efforts] is the best way to spare them the pain, suffering, humiliation, and indignity of becoming homeless." Please take a moment to read this important Marin County Grant Jury report on the need for the County of Marin to develop a homelessness prevention strategy for older adults in our community. "The 2023-2024 Marin County Grand Jury (Grand Jury) reviewed the County’s current homelessness programs and services and concluded that little or no attention is being paid to prevention. There are few services for older adults on the precipice of losing their housing. Despite several previous Grand Jury reports regarding the growing need to prioritize the housing needs of older adults, there remains a lack of urgency in establishing a systemic approach that would ensure a long-term commitment to implementing and maintaining practical solutions that prevent older adults from falling into homelessness. This report contains recommendations that the Board should implement immediately to prevent this crisis from worsening. The Grand Jury recommends the development of a strategic plan for homelessness prevention. In addition, the Grand Jury recommends that the Board complete a cost-benefit analysis that compares the cost of providing services to people after they become homeless, to the cost of proposed homelessness prevention solutions. The Grand Jury also recommends that the Community Development Agency (CDA) be designated as the lead agency to coordinate all efforts related to homelessness prevention for older adults." #prevention #agingequity

At the annual State of Homelessness Address, we announced our third consecutive year of reductions in homelessness in Dallas and Collin counties, including the lowest total number of people experiencing homelessness in nearly a decade. 👏 According to the 2024 Point-in-Time count, a total of 3,718 individuals are experiencing homelessness on any given night in Dallas and Collin counties. That equates to a 19% reduction in overall homelessness and a 24% reduction in unsheltered homelessness since 2021. The strategic moves we’ve made as a community are showing results! But we still have work to do. Our community must continue investing in these effective solutions that will house more neighbors experiencing homelessness with the wraparound support they need to rebuild their lives. Scott Larson, CEO of HomeAid, discusses the importance of these data sources in understanding and addressing the crisis of those experiencing homelessness. The AHAR, published by HUD, provides an overview of homelessness in the US, while the Point-In-Time (PIT) count estimates the number of individuals experiencing homelessness on a given night. On the other hand, the Housing Inventory Count (HIC) details available housing resources for those without a home. Understanding these acronyms is crucial in: -Assessing the scale of homelessness -Identifying trends and patterns -Informing resource allocation -Advocacy and public awareness -Tracking progress and evaluating interventions By analyzing this data, HomeAid aims to make informed decisions, prioritize resources, and collaborate effectively to address homelessness and improve housing stability in the communities we serve.
