This is one of my fav MJ stories - In basketball, he was a god. In baseball, he was...not. To get himself out of a slump, he would play Nintendo. "Jordan vs. Bird: One on One" And he'd RUN UP the score on the poor computer Bird. ...𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥. "This is hilarious, and psychotic," I thought. But a 2012 study showed that he was ahead of his time: 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭. They had 2 mice compete for territory. In round 1, they drugged Mouse B so that Mouse A would win. In round 2, Mouse B was not drugged, ...but Mouse A still won with a much higher probability. They did this over & over again with other mice. Same results. Things happen in your body & your brain when you win. This explains hot hands, winning streaks, dynasties. As a perfectly apropos Monday post... Find ways to create momentum with wins. It can be as easy as just acknowledging small wins. Science says it would be silly not to... Especially when the losing effect is just as strong.

The "General" Zack commanded the court, leading his team with the poise and precision of a seasoned strategist. His highlight-reel dunk wasn't just a play; it was the exclamation point on a statement win, earning him the MVP honors. By the final buzzer, the score was 101-78, with the Reading Rockets firmly establishing dominion in the skies. For those who chose bonfires over basketball, they missed the season's most explosive game. In 1986, the Gene Hackman movie Hoosier's was released. IMDB describes it as a sports drama with this plot: "A coach with a checkered past and a local drunk train a small-town high school basketball team to become a top contender for the state championship in 1950's Indiana." I remember renting the VHS tape and watching the movie with my dad. Over and over again. I thought Hackman's character, "Coach Norman Dale" was fascinating. I had a mirror in my room. I spent hours in front of the mirror with a rolled up newspaper in my hand reciting his speech: "They say, um, the condition in tournament play is to not talk about the next step. To climb the one in front of you. I'm sure that going to the state finals is beyond your wildest dreams, so let's just keep it right there. Forget about the crowds. The size of the school. Their fancy uniforms. And remember what got you here. Focus on the fundamentals which we have gone over time and time again. And most importantly, don't get caught up thinking about winning or losing this game. If you put your effort and concentration into playing to your potential, to be the best that you can be... I don't care what the scoreboard says, at the end of the game, in my book we're going to be winners." When I was 7 or 8 years old, walking around with a rolled up Nashville Banner newspaper, I was just pretending to be a character that I admired. But think about the message. How frequently do we focus on the wrong things? What someone else has. What someone else accomplished. Instead... Focus on what got you to where you are. Climb the step in front of you. The greatest bracket in March Madness history was accidentally filled out by a guy who forgot he even made it. But first, the odds of filling out a perfect March Madness Bracket are INSANE: If each game was a coin flip, your odds of filling out a perfect bracket would be 1 in 9.2 quintillion (one quintillion is one billion billions). But if you at least knew something about basketball (mainly, 14, 15, and 16 seeds rarely win), you'd improve your odds to 1 in 120.2 billion. So what's the closest someone has ever come to pulling this off? Well, it involves one guy picking the first 49 games of the tournament correctly (for reference, you have a better shot at winning the Powerball TWICE than doing that). What can the pro-life community learn from the game of football in order to compete more effectively against the abortion industry?   That may hit you as a strange question, but it’s college football bowl season right now and that question came to me last night as I was watching two teams play in one of the bowl games. As I watched the game unfold, I was extremely impressed by how well the players and coaches on both teams executed their game plans.   It was all the more impressive because if you know how football is played, it is a very complex sport requiring a team to have an incredible focus on details to execute well enough to outscore one’s opponent.   How is this relevant to the competition between team pro-life and team pro-abortion? Is it a good thing to drag time intentionally on Throw-ins? ⚽️ 3 reasons WHY it’s not! Generally I would like to have 2 x 30 min efficient playing time (let’s take that in another post). You will often hear people say that a team drags time on throw-ins when they are on top in a game. Some times it’s intentionally, sometimes they just have a weak/underdevelloped throw-in strategy. If it’s intentionally it’s bad because: 1. With new focus on timewasting the referees are now adding a more correct (longer) extra time. So, this will only break the rhytm of the game, and actually not take any time of the clock. 2. If you are slow to get the ball. Slow to come in place at the line. Then it will be much harder for you to keep possession of the ball because the opponents are now positioned and organized. It doesn’t help you much that you break the rhytm of the game, or “take a few seconds of the clock” if you lose the ball after 3 seconds. 3. It’s just bad for the game to try to drag time in general. The same with throw-ins. Yes, the fans of that team will say YES, but the opponents fans… and all the neutral spectators HATE it. So, let’s get some fast throw-ins from the teams when it’s possible… and if not… let’s see some great space creation from the players. WE can lift this sport together… let’s make Throw-ins sexy ☀️⚽️
