🔗 LinkedIn Article by David Feygin, Ph.D., MBA: Read https://lnkd.in/gWr9pyMr 🌐 Navigating Transformation in Healthcare: A Long Game Perspective Bill Gates once remarked on our tendency to overestimate short-term changes and underestimate the profound shifts over a decade. In healthcare, this rings true; disruptive transformations take time. While industries like tech rapidly evolve, healthcare remains resiliently rooted in the past. The introduction of ride-sharing and short-term home rental apps altered industries within a year. Contrastingly, healthcare, despite its broad impact, maintains a sluggish pace. Electronic Medical Records persist with decades-old structures, presenting a stark contrast to the dynamic shifts seen in other sectors. So, why the discrepancy? Healthcare's complexity stems from its diversity—addressing various diseases, involving diverse stakeholders, and encompassing an array of care technologies. Change demands a synchronized shift across these factors, making the process intricate and time-consuming. Another challenge lies in the industry's isolation. Healthcare operates like a cottage industry, lacking widespread technology leverage. The absence of standardized practices impedes scalability, hindering the impact of potential game-changing solutions. Clinical diversity further complicates matters. A universal solution is elusive, given the multitude of disconnected sub-systems involved in even routine patient interactions. The cautionary tale of Theranos serves as a reminder—prioritizing innovation without understanding complexity can lead to dire consequences. Enter the collaboration of Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JP Morgan Chase. Rather than signaling imminent disruption, this union highlights systemic challenges and opportunities for efficiency. Viewing healthcare holistically is crucial, recognizing the need to understand the entire system, from educating clinicians to customer service. In the realm of Digital Health at Boston Scientific, we embrace an iterative approach. Applying Lean Startup and Agile principles, we pursue small steps to address big problems, acknowledging that one-size-fits-all solutions fall short. Healthcare's complexity demands constant adaptation and improvement. The key isn't a single disruptive leap but a continual focus on the patient. Countless companies aim to disrupt, but the real impact lies in patient-centric innovation. By listening deeply, learning, and evolving, we can make iterative improvements that contribute to a faster-changing healthcare landscape. #HealthcareInnovation #DigitalHealth #PatientCentricity #BostonScientific #HealthcareTransformation

The need for a change in the current model of care delivery is more pressing than ever. And for good reason ! It's challenging to fully leverage the resources available at home to improve clinical outcomes while reducing costs. The strategy of hospital-at-home care holds immense promise. 🏡 Indeed, it has already demonstrated its effectiveness. Unfortunately, there remains a significant gap in home data collection and consumer engagement in their own health and well-being. Healthcare organizations often lack the expertise in science, technology, and behavioral health necessary to use home data for preventive care effectively. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀. Ed Miller, chief technology officer for the Center of Medical Interoperability at the Connectivity Standards Alliance, has emphasized the critical importance of developing interoperability standards between home devices and healthcare systems. These standards should enable transparent data sharing.👨💻 As healthcare systems cannot lead this transformation alone, it is evident that exploring new partnerships with companies like Amazon and Apple, renowned for their user-centric approach, will be part of the solution. 𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑐𝑒 : https://lnkd.in/ehsGTrWz

Three Impacts of a Deeper Understanding of Apple's Commitment to Advancing Healthcare Technology for Senior Care Providers. 1. Enhanced Remote Monitoring: Apple's healthcare technology, with its focus on continuous health data tracking, could empower in-home senior care providers to remotely monitor seniors' vital signs, sleep patterns, and chronic conditions in real-time. This means caregivers can promptly respond to any concerning changes and provide timely assistance, thereby increasing the safety and well-being of seniors. 2. Personalized Care Plans: By integrating Apple's health solutions, in-home senior care providers can create personalized care plans that adapt to each senior's specific health needs. This high level of customization can significantly improve the quality of care, ensuring that seniors receive the right interventions and treatments at the right time. Ultimately, this leads to better health outcomes and a higher quality of life. 3. Cost-Efficiency and Access: Apple's foray into healthcare technology may lead to cost-effective solutions for in-home senior care. These technologies can reduce the need for frequent in-person visits, making quality care more affordable and accessible. This benefits seniors by providing high-quality care without the need for frequent and costly hospitalizations, making aging in place a more viable and attractive option. It will be essential to closely monitor Apple's advancements in the healthcare sector despite the challenges they may face. They have a history of disrupting industries with little warning, often through a single product launch or feature update.
Why Apple is Struggling to Disrupt Healthcare By Stig Albinus https://lnkd.in/e-Qqgr-v Bloomberg published an excellent analysis of Apple’s struggles to revolutionize healthcare on Nov 1, 2023. Fundamentally, Apple is torn between being a provider of health awareness tools for healthy consumers and moving beyond that to engage in treatment and care for sick patients. For now and in a foreseeable future, Apple will likely stay away from moving into actual treatment and care. There are many reasons for that. Here are my thoughts building on the article: 1. Healthcare delivery is extremely complex with multiple stakeholders, including clinicians, provider organizations, academic researchers, patient organizations, payers, law firms, regulators, policy makers and others, many of whom with conflicting interests. 2. Products that enable invasive medical interventions are heavily regulated and typically require approval by regulatory authorities as well as additional health technology assessment and acceptance by payers before they can be used in mefical practice. 3. Becoming a medical advice company can be fraught with legal and financial risks if products turn out to have safety issues. Many medical device manufacturers have had, and continue to have, legal issues and expensive law suits when products fail to match expectations and specifications. 4. Science is constantly evolving and can render novel technologies obsolete even before they have have passed final regulatory clearance. With the advent of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, medical science is becoming even more complex. 5. Finally, and most importantly, the vital role of the individual clinician in the treatment and care of a patient is often overlooked when the potential revolutionary promise of technology in healthcare is being touted. Medicine will continue to blend science and art, even in a high-tech future. Every therapeutic transaction between a clinician and a patient is subject to the judgment of the individual clinician based on his or her knowledge and experience, and the awareness and engagement of the patient. This transaction can be facilitated and supported, but not replaced, by technology. Apple has many fascinating opportunities in the rapidly evolving landscape of healtcare, but the company needs to tread very carefully in this space.

According to Gartner, 75% of healthcare providers will effectively reduce their reliance on EHR-native applications to deliver better experiences and outcomes, and improve efficiencies. This comes as healthcare consumers expect their experiences to mirror that of consumer-leading companies such as Amazon, Apple, and Netflix, to name a few. Moving beyond the EHR requires deploying a consumer-digital strategy that truly empowers communities. How are you thinking about this shift in healthcare delivery? Source: https://lnkd.in/guirwUMq
