Today’s sad news of the passing of UCLA and NBA legend Bill Walton has really been a gut punch. Sure, when the games he was covering with the ever-patient Dave Pasch were blowouts he would go off into sublime/ridiculous rabbit holes, but there was always something endearing about his earnestness. Back in January of 2018, I was fortunate to have the use of Phil Knight’s courtside tickets at Matthew Knight Arena when my longtime buddy Marc B. Spiegel was visiting my wife and me. The three of us, and my son Mitch Reames, drove to Eugene and we saw a great Duck victory. We also enjoyed up close the great chemistry Walton had with the UO “Pit Crew” section right behind him and Pasch. Walton exuded passion and energy and we kept alternating watching the game and checking out Walton’s antics. After the game, we decided to approach him to say hello and he could not have been more gracious. When he learned I was Nike’s historian his face lit up and he talked about how much he loved “Shoe Dog,” Phil Knight, Nike, Eugene, Oregon and on and on. I offered to give him a tour of Nike and the archives building and he said he would take me up on that and gave me his contact information. Then he said he really needed to pee, but before he bolted off he posed for a picture. Over the next couple of seasons we could never come up with a date/time for him to get to Portland for the tour, and then Covid shut things down, I retired, and now he’s gone. Rest in peace, Bill. Thank you for leading Portland to its only NBA title and for all the hilarious comments over the years as you covered “The Conference of Champions.”

Scott he was truly an amazing person. I was honored to be great friends with Bill. He became a small partner in our sports brand Cali Strong. He would not accept any money which couldn’t have afforded and he did amazing things for us just to giveback. I met Bill by interviewing him to be the Chairman of the San Diego Sports Innovators in 2008. Little did I know he had just came off radical back surgery. He was back from the Dead and associated me with one of those who offered a hand up during his darkest hours. Bill was a hero of mine growing up in Omaha. I loved UCLA basketball. He in turn helped me during dark times and did incredible things for our brand. When his 30 For 30 came out everyone said get Bill to wear your brand. I never asked Bill for anything like that. It was all organic. When the movie came out I saw him wearing our gear in 5 key scenes. Unbelievable! He was One of One. Today was an incredibly difficult day for me but it was also one of the best days to appreciate life. We can never take time for granted. Bill brought positive energy to everyone in his life. We are honored to know him and love him.

He had a heart that matched his smile. My partner always told me of their friendship and I was like hm mmm, then Bill saw us at Desert Trip in the VIP area (concert festival) and I heard a booming call out - “Shane!!! Shane get over here! It was Bill calling out to my partner who he greeted with the biggest smile and bear hug. He turned to me and said “oh amd this must be your daughter” . 😂 That was Bill. Always friendly, always joking and whether a friend was famous or some scrawny kid he got to know from hanging at games asking for game-worn shoes as a kid, Bill greeted his friends -new and old - with warmth and genuine love. His mark in this place will long be felt on all those he touched. A life well lived, indeed.

Bill and Mo handed me (as team captain) the Goldenball (PDX City) champion trophy (Fernwood Hoops) in March of 1978. Their brand of teamwork and unselfish play (including passing that back door to Bobby Gross) became our measure. RIP (City) Bill.

YOU HAVE SOME GREAT MEMORIES AND HAD A PARTNER WITH A GREAT LEGACY JIM STROESSER. SAD STUFF. I CAN'T WAIT TO READ YOUR BOOK.

One of the best, good energy humans ever. A big loss - not only for the sports community. What a great story to share Scott, as usual 👍🏻

A great player, a kind and thoughtful individual.
