"Before Silicon Valley became a byword for innovation, Route 128, outside of Boston, was America's technology highway, connecting the country’s premier technology companies and research facilities. However, this first American high-tech cluster likely would not have developed as it did without one of the biggest shocks to federal R&D funding in US economic history. In a paper in the American Economic Review, authors Daniel P. Gross and Bhaven N. Sampat explain how a World War II research effort jump-started innovation hubs like Route 128 across the United States. The thing with pictures is that at first glance they don't reveal much. I couldn´t agree more. Sara Wallin and Martin Nilsson Jacobi highlights the needs for support of @deeptech funding with this article and in this "financial ice age" this becomes even more urgent. There is an excellent and newly launched funding initiative from Vinnova for deeptech here: https://lnkd.in/d88Hg-xN Deeptech companies have, just as other startups, many of the challenges and from a funding perspective they often have particularly challenging conditions regarding: 1. Time from idea to market 2. Costs for materials, equipment, labs, testing, certification, patents, etc., in the development phase 3. Costs for testing facilities, quality verification, permits, etc., in the commercialization phase 4. Need for funding through grants, subsidies, scholarships, and loans 5. Founders' experience in financial engineering 6. Addition of team members through co-founders with commercialization experience 7. Ability to attract investors with a long investment horizon I find Chalmers Ventures evergreen model and who they mix researchers with master business students as a highly effective way to meet these challenges.

Every now and then, when a story about a possible game-changing scientific discovery makes it into the mainstream news, friends from outside the tech and VC communities ask me whether I’m excited about it. It happened just this summer over the reporting on LK-99, alleged (but very unlikely) to be the world’s first room-temperature semiconductor. I think people like me are what you might think of as long-term optimists when it comes to “holy grail” scientific discoveries. We imagine futures where sci-fi-type technologies are a part of everyday life. I want to believe that someday someone will hit upon a room-temperature superconductor. Even if there are no clear signs these breakthroughs are on the horizon, I think it’s helpful for us to have this optimistic outlook. Doing so lets us game out the potential specific applications of those technologies. In addition to giving us a head start on innovation when the breakthrough does finally come, thought experiments along these lines can also yield insights and ideas that can actually be achieved with the technology we already have. But will I accept one of these breakthroughs has suddenly just been achieved on the back of a couple of news reports or a pitch? Absolutely not. Deeptech VCs are there to scrutinize and get domain experts on the case. We’ll believe it when the people we trust advise us to. Being a VC means you need to be open minded, but not so open minded that your brain falls out. #venturecapital #technology #entrepreneurship
