In 2016, then Commissioner of the City of Chicago’s Department of Family and Support Service (DFSS) Lisa Morrison Butler expanded youth mentoring to serve thousands more young men. A new Results for America case study details what what it took to scale this effort and the results the City was able to achieve: ✅ Built on the best practices of the Chicago-based Becoming a Man (BAM) youth mentoring program, which rigorous evaluations showed reduced violent-crime arrests by 45-50% and increased graduation rates by nearly 20% ✅ Refocused the Request for Proposal (RFP) process toward measurable outcomes ✅ Enlisted more than 50 community-based organizations to implement an #evidence-based approach, collect #data, and join a learning cohort to improve #results ✅ Tapped partners – including University of Chicago Urban Labs – to help track progress in meeting the needs of youth across 22 neighborhoods ✅ Launched the program with philanthropic dollars, then sustained it with public investment ✅ Over time, the City was able to serve 7,000+ more young people in mentoring programs that were more effective Read the case study here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dDVqWCTb

The largest bricks-and-mortar operator of classical charter schools in the nation realized it had a problem: it was growing fast . . . but it could be growing far faster. The nonprofit’s success had been powered by strategic partnerships with #foundations. Those partnerships had fueled skyrocketing growth—so staff realized that adding new partnerships would only accelerate that growth. A stronger organization could expand beyond Arizona to new states, which is exactly what staff needed to increase the organization’s #impact. So, they brought in AmPhil, and AmPhil brought in a proprietary database, institutional knowledge, and extensive network. Those tools enabled @AmPhil experts to provide in-depth research on more than 100 foundations, ensuring their priorities were aligned with the nonprofit’s mission. Then, AmPhil and nonprofit staff worked closely together to create approach strategies for each foundation prospect. That outreach paid off! Thanks to new foundation partnerships, the charter school operator has expanded its network to include 44 schools in 4 states . . . and they’re only getting started. Transformative foundation #grants are at the heart of the organization’s #growth and its ability to start new programs for its teachers and students Learn how AmPhil can help your strategic development operations right here: https://lnkd.in/gKdNqXWx

For over five years, the Building Institutions and Networks Initiative (BUILD) has been helping over 350 civil society organisations (CSOs) around the globe grow their impact. 🌐 As non-state, non-profit organisations, these groups benefit greatly from institutional backing, which enables them to expand their resources and further their advocacies. ✍🏽📢 This makes Ford Foundation’s work through BUILD of great import to CSOs. And with NIRAS, the foundation is studying for over three years “the BUILD effect” and the initiative’s impact on partner groups. To be successful, BUILD aims for its grantees to improve their resilience in at least one of these four key areas: 1️⃣ People, pertaining to leadership and board development; diversity, equity and inclusion; organisational culture; talent management; 2️⃣ Strategy, pertaining to mission clarity and coherence; organisational learning; adaptive strategy; network building; 3️⃣ Finances, pertaining to financial management, operating reservices, fundraising; 4️⃣ Systems, pertaining to physical and digital security; information technology; communications; legal compliance. Using the Equitable Evaluation Framework (EEF) and through a utilisation-focussed approach, NIRAS will look at these areas to measure how much and in what ways BUILD has supported its partners’ resilience through the years. 🔎 This is an exciting project for us here at NIRAS, and we look forward to publishing updates about this project soon. To read about the study, plus the approaches NIRAS will take in handling it, visit the link below! ⭐ #NIRASProjects #CSOs #BUILDinitiative
