CLT Toolbox secures $1 million to expand mass timber design software globally In a significant boost for sustainable construction technology, Melbourne-based startup CLT Toolbox has raised an additional $1 million AUD in funding.   This round features a notable contribution from climate-focused venture capital firm Giant Leap. The investment underscores a growing commitment to using mass timber as a mainstream material in construction projects worldwide. The new funds will primarily fuel the expansion of CLT Toolbox's pioneering design software across the European market, following its successful launch in the Australia-New Zealand (ANZ) region. This expansion aims to forge vital connections and partnerships that will further the adoption of mass timber globally.    Adam Jones, CEO of CLT Toolbox expressed excitement over the latest funding round, saying: "With this new capital, we are poised to expand our software to include the structural design of connections, most notably the most technically challenging part of mass timber design. As we expand the offering to the European region in 2024 and North America in 2025, our design infrastructure can accelerate the growth of mass timber to become a mainstream material".   By addressing the critical shortage of timber engineering specialists, the software is set to revolutionise the industry’s approach to sustainable building.    Adam Milgrom, Partner at Giant Leap said: “CLT Toolbox’s solution provides a pathway to reduce the 11% of global emissions caused by embodied carbon in the construction industry. The Steel City’s Transformation: Relocating Steel Factories by 2025 On May 28, the People’s Committee of Hong Bang district (Hai Phong) announced that the district and the People’s Committee of Quan Toan ward had sent notices to eight steel production and trading enterprises regarding the relocation of their manufacturing facilities and warehouses from the inner-city area to improve the urban landscape as directed by the Hai Phong People’s Committee. WHICH BUSINESSES ARE SUBJECT TO RELOCATION? According to statistics from the Hong Bang district People’s Committee, there are eight steel production and trading enterprises in the area, managing and utilizing over 50 hectares of land that is subject to relocation. Of this, more than 36 hectares are in Quan Toan ward (Hong Bang district), and over 14.2 hectares are in An Hong commune (An Duong district). Besides the Vietnam-Korea Joint Venture Company, which trades in steel, the remaining enterprises are all engaged in steel manufacturing. Of the seven steel manufacturing companies along the old National Highway 5, two are operating stably: Vietnam Steel Pipe Company Limited and VinaAusteel Steel Production Joint Venture Company (Vietnam-Australia Steel). Vietnam Steel Pipe Company Limited is using 33,268 square meters of land in Quan Toan ward for a steel pipe manufacturing plant, with a land use duration until the end of 2033. VinaAusteel is utilizing 55,767 square meters of land for offices, production workshops, and steel rolling warehouses, with a land use duration until 2025. Vietnam Steel Pipe Company’s operating factory is also on the relocation list for Hai Phong’s urban renovation plan The remaining five steel manufacturing enterprises have ceased production and business activities. Some have had their land revoked, while others have transferred part of their assets on the land to other enterprises. Specifically, the Joint Venture Company of Steel Mechanics and Construction Materials with Foreign Investment in VSC – POSCO is using 60,093 square meters of land for a 350,000-ton-per-year steel rolling line, with a land use duration until July 11, 2016. Since April 29, 2022, the Hai Phong People’s Committee has decided to revoke the land of this enterprise, and the company has dismantled and moved its assets, handing over the land to the Land Development Center under the Department of Natural Resources and Environment. SSE Steel Manufacturing Company is utilizing 43,895 square meters of land for a steel structure manufacturing plant, with a land use certificate granted in 2007 and a duration until August 2027. However, according to the Hong Bang district People’s Committee, the company’s workshops and warehouses on the land are closed and inactive. New Post: Gravel gets funding from NEA to support Indonesia’s booming construction industry - Indonesia’s construction industry is growing quickly, driven by residential and industrial building, alongside infrastructure development plans by the government. Sourcing skilled labor is still a time-intensive process, however, and often relies on personal networks and lengthy recruitment efforts. The founders of Gravel want to change that by making it easier to find workers and other construction professionals. The Jakarta-based startup announced today it has raised $14 million. Investors include New Enterprise Associate (NEA), Marvell Technology Group co-founder Weili Tai, Cadence Design System executive chairman Lip-Bu Tan, SMDV, East Ventures and other strategic investors. Gravel is NEA’s first investment in Southeast Asia. While Gravel is currently focused on Indonesia, it plans to enter international markets and will use its funding on business expansion. Gravel started in 2019 as an app to connect users with construction workers. The platform now has four main features—Gravel Construction for hiring daily construction workers, Gravel Borongan for construction with lump sum contracts, Gravel Maintenance for on-demand home repairs and Gravel Material for ordering tools and materials. Gravel says it saw 45x revenue growth between 2020 and 2022, and now has 1.7 million workers on the platform. It has been used for 6,000 projects in 20 Indonesian provinces, ranging from residential construction to larger ones like LRT Jabadebek (Greater Jakarta Light Rail Transit), Jakarta International Stadium, Pelni Hospital and the Keong Man IMAX Theatre. The startup’s co-founders are chairman Nicholas Sutardja and co-CEOs Georgi Ferdwindra Petra and Fredy Yanto. Before launching Gravel, Petra graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a civil and environmental engineering masters and spent time working in the construction industry, where he saw challenges with finding labor. Seeking a solution to the problem, Petra and Yanto began working on Gravel with their own funds in 2017, before launching it in 2019 after securing funding.
