Proud to see this Edmonton based Social Impact VC invest in 19 companies since May 2022 (almost 2 companies per month). Investing in Social Impact = Stellar Financial Results. I've seen that in my portfolio of over 110 direct investments and as such, launched ScaleGood Fund last year to focus on that thesis. In October, KIN hosted a 90-minute Catalyze Session for Telosity Ventures, an early-stage venture capital fund focused on digital wellness and mental health in North America. It invests in vetted mental health and digital wellness startups, manages innovation challenges with cash prizes, and shares research with the community. They have impacted 1 million lives to date, and seek to expand to 5 million, with an emphasis on reaching women and youth. Over 1 billion individuals are currently suffering from mental illness across the globe, but there are significant challenges to responding to this need because of mental health provider shortage, equity, limited options for coverage, etc. Telosity seeks to find innovative solutions to bridge this gap by investing in carefully vetted mental health and digital wellness startups. We brought together a cohort of leaders to help the organization enhance its pitch materials, and outreach, as well as identify limited partners for its venture capital fund. I want to step into a topic that requires not just more conversation, but more action - equitable access to capital and investing opportunities. Melinda French Gates and Pivotal Ventures are investing in women-led funds because of the disparity of access to capital for both fund managers and the startups that funds support. As Melinda well notes, this disparity has been known for years, and yet it has not moved in a material way. It's time for that to change. First, we need more Fund of Funds and LPs who are willing to commit to Women-Led fund managers - there needs to be at least one female identifying GP in a fund to start to move the dial. Pivotal Ventures is one example doing this. The Social Finance Fund in Canada and their wholesalers Boann Social Impact and Realize Capital Partners are stepping into this world. At Spring it's a core reason while we launched Spring Impact Capital with Olivia Hornby (Shamash), a first time fund manager, as one of three GPs. We need to invest in the change. Thus, incredible women led funds, including Rhiannon Davies (she/her) and Sandpiper Ventures, Shelley Kuipers + Judy Fairburn and The51 Funds, Lise Birikundavyi, CFA and BKR Capital, Hilary Kilgour and TheVenture.Fund can build on the incredible work they are already doing. Second, we need to activate more women into VC roles and angel investing. BKR partnering with Future Capital with the BKR Venture Capital Fellowship is an excellent example. Movement51, SheBoot, Women's Equity Lab, Spring Collective, The Firehood, and Sage Initiative are all examples of organizations that are specifically catalyzing women into investing. This can lead to more women-led ventures being funded at pre-seed and seed stages, helping them get to Seed and A round and support from VCs and thus moving the dial organically too. Third, we need to tell the stories of these women - the GPs, the angels, and the ventures - to mainstream the understanding that they, and there organizations, and excellent investments as Melinda well notes in her article. Finally, we need to do it together. The more we co-invest in funds, collaborate on angel investor capacity building, and the more we co-invest and support women led ventures, the faster we will accelerate this change. NEW: These social ventures are scaling impact by improving systems, not disrupting them Disrupters have long held the edge in Silicon Valley, as well as in the world of social ventures. If some system isn’t delivering, goes the conventional wisdom, just topple it and rebuild a more optimal version. There’s one problem: The approach doesn’t always work. One pioneering social investor found that system-disruptors had less impact on social inequities than solutions that tweaked existing structures and improved them. Leverage the system, don’t disrupt it, now says Jim Bildner, CEO of the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, which has funded more than 200 nonprofit and for-profit social enterprises in the US, Europe, Africa and India.
