To evaluate the effect of corporate culture on safety performance, one must address both the safety program and safety process elements. An effective way to achieve this is through a validated perception survey that effectively identifies and evaluates both elements. A validated survey is not only descriptive, it is also predictive. With a validated survey, the responses related to optimal safety performance are already known. Therefore, the survey responses and their statistically related organizational factors that are helping or hindering the level of safety performance can be readily identified. In order to derive successful solutions, one must first operationally define the situation targeted for improvement. With an operational definition such as that attained through a validated survey, everyone in the organization is defining safety in the same manner. Wanting to improve your safety culture and performance? Did you know that across thousands of businesses the average safety culture maturity is locked in at tier 3 on the safety culture maturity roadmap? In other words the majority of businesses are only really performing ok or slightly less than ok! Should we be concerned? Hell yes! Safety compliance only gets you so far. For a quantum leap in reducing workplace harm businesses need to focus on embedding safety culture into their DNA. We have clients who have increased their safety culture by 5% and reduced harm by 29%, by 30% and 34%, and 3% and 26% … all focused on improving safety culture and reducing harm in their business and in some cases their supply chains. The question is how? One of the most insightful aspects of this graph is that less than 2% of the safety culture elements in the Safe365 framework that measures safety culture demonstrates excellence!!! It shows that we still have some way to go to improve our safety culture performance. There are few organisations who score high on all safety culture elements. We know when we meet these exemplar organizations, who excel in the majority of our safety culture elements, their executives and management oooooze safety culture from top down. One in particular, a major construction business, scoring in the 90s on our safety culture index, meaning they are scoring extremely high on all safety culture elements, hasn’t had harm in the workplace for over 4 years! Let me repeat that … 4 years! One of the hallmarks of this particular business is the total engagement and commitment of their executive and their understanding of what great safety culture looks like and how to execute it in the business … they take it extremely seriously… understand their legal requirements, moral, ethical and commercial… duty of extreme care in effect. By comparison, one of the major systemic failures in businesses is the lack of understanding at C Suite level of what great safety culture looks like! This happens to be one of the worst scoring safety culture elements in the Safe365 data sets. See the link? I find this equation eloquent. At certain stages of safety culture, it's more appropriate to improve operational effectiveness by raising the level of operational discipline, rather than raising standards

Why increasing TRUST we make organizations safer ?
