John Anderson was Leader of the National Party and Deputy PM during the Howard Government. He is a decent man. Before the last federal election, he sought to re-enter Parliament but the NSW National Party told him to nick off. In his place, they selected a party official with no record of achievement in anything, whose name no-one can remember.
Anderson is concerned about the state of public debate in Australia. It is appallingly bad and infantile. Anderson says "Good public policy cannot emerge from a bad public debate". The problem is much worse than that.
Sadly, #JohnAnderson is trapped in an #OldRight political bubble. Try as he does, he can't escape the assumptions of the Old Right - the British Empire is our home, monarchy is here for good, crony capitalism is our working economic model, managerialism is the proper function of government, career politicians should be trusted to do the right thing, Christian faith is really interchangeable with patriotism, Australian history is a story of explorers and squatters, privilege is unfairly maligned, group-think is a good thing.
Public debate is in a parlous state in Austalia because the #Right is still immersed in this worldview, and the #Left is off with the fairies. In every exchange between them, the general public gets nothing but a poke in the eye from each side.
There is no enlightenment, no insight, no long-term thinking, no strategic outlook, no working consensus that can emerge from political exchanges between these two exhausted, mutually dependent but moribund, views of the world.
It's time for the rest of the country - the 80% of us in mainstream Australia - to get a look in. The narrative of the #politicalclass, its personnel, and its institutions, have outlived their use-by-date.
