This event, along with the days preceding it, imparted several valuable lessons, one of which underscores how a diverse energy supply mix assisted Alberta's grid in averting rolling blackouts and facilitating recovery from a stressed system. The synergy of natural gas assets as the foundational support and energy storage as the peak proved crucial to ensuring our lights were kept on during a demanding period for the electrical system. Thermal generation hit 176 GW during non-solar hours, showcasing operational efficiency. Renewable sources played a vital role in meeting peak demands, reflecting a balanced energy mix strategy. India plans to nearly double its power capacity to 900 GW by 2030 from the current 427 GW, responding to a projected peak demand increase to 366 GW from the current 243 GW with 500 GW from renewable energy sources. 2. 80 GW Thermal Power Capacity by 2032: India is set to enhance its thermal power capacity by 80 gigawatts (GW) by 2032 to meet escalating electricity demand nationwide. This target emphasizes the need for increased investments in thermal power projects. 3. Rising Electricity Demand: Strong economic activity is driving a projected 6% increase in electricity demand for FY2025, following an 11% surge in the first quarter. 4. Plant Load Factor (PLF) Stability: Projections indicate a stable 70% PLF for thermal power plants in FY2025, minimizing the need for extensive new capacity additions. 5. Contribution of Renewable Energy: India plans to add over 30 GW of new renewable energy capacity by FY2025, aiming for a sustainable and diversified power generation mix. 6. Coal Supply and Imports: Adequate coal stock levels, including 7% from imports, ensure uninterrupted fuel supply for expanding thermal power infrastructure in FY2025. 7. Government Strategy: Augmenting thermal power capacity forms a key part of India's energy strategy, integrating investments in thermal and renewable sectors to fortify energy security. 8. ⚡️ Yesterday evening, Alberta's electricity system saw a grid alert. Today, we set a new hourly summer electricity demand record of 11,820 MW from 5-6 PM MT – and the summer's not over yet. We may beat this record as soon as tomorrow. The system is changing and we need to rapidly modernize our infrastructure, regulations, and more. On both days, 🔋 energy storage played a large role in supporting our grid, but we need more of it – plus interties, demand response, and clean generation. However, AEMO warns of the potential for load shedding, a last resort measure during periods of peak demand, emphasising the delicate balance required to maintain a stable grid. Load shedding, as highlighted by AEMO, is a deliberate shutdown to prevent grid collapse, underlining the critical need for reliable electricity supplies. With potential blackouts on the horizon, it is crucial to be prepared. Consider assembling an emergency kit and utilising apps like BOM Weather, Red Cross Get Prepared, and Emergency Plus. The challenges highlighted by AEMO underscore the urgency of accelerating investments in renewable energy infrastructure.
