✏️ How to brief a copywriter If you are working with a copywriter, congratulations! You are onto a good thing. And if you’re considering hiring one, then clearly you already have some idea of what we can do. Having said that, sometimes the details can get lost in all the excitement. And while we can weave a degree of magic with our words, sadly we are not mind readers. So it always helps if you can provide us with some intel before we get going. Here are the questions I always ask new clients: → Where will the copy be published? Website, email newsletter, blog, print ad, social media, etc. → When will the website, newsletter, blog or advert go live? And when do you need my words by? → What do you want to achieve? Are you aiming to attract new customers, promote a product, build brand recognition or simply educate and inform? → Who are you talking to? Are you mainly speaking to one group, but also another separate group, to a lesser degree? Tell me as much as you can about the audience: pain points, likes, dislikes, ambitions, fears, characteristics. → How do you sound? What’s your brand personality? Funny, serious, direct, casual, relaxed, witty, empathetic, dry, warm, formal, etc. → What are you offering? Describe the thing you’re promoting in two or three sentences. → How does it help your customers? I need solid reasons they should care about your product or service. → Who are you up against? List up to five of your competitors. → What is your unique selling point? Explain why customers flock to you over the competition. → How do you want your copy delivered? Usually it's good old Microsoft Word or Google Docs. By asking these questions, I’m getting vital clues into how to sound, what to say and who I’m talking to. The 1 question you must ask before hiring a copywriter: Why? Yes, that's the question. - Why did you choose these customers to survey/interview? - Why are we focusing on this niche audience? - Why are we positioning in this product category? - Why did you choose that headline? - Why are we leading with this message? - Why is section A before section B? - Why did you put this piece of social proof here? - Why did you recommend this image? - Why are we talking about these features and capabilities? - Why are we mentioning these use cases? - Why did you pick these testimonials to feature? - Why *didn’t* you mention this feature/benefit? The list goes on. And if you noticed most of these questions have nothing to do with actual “writing”, you’d be – write. Copywriters worth your investment in will have clear, thought-out answers. How much value does simply TALKING with a copywriter provide you? It's a lot. A couple of years ago I worked with a client that had developed a piece of software with a theme park and wanted to roll it out to other theme parks. They wanted more business, but needed to understand what would drive other theme parks to purchase their product. They didn't have any resources at that point to help them to sell it or explain it to their potential customers.
