Chief Executive Officer and President of Delta Dental Insurance

Menopause impacts more than one million women in the U.S. each year, and yet it remains deeply stigmatized, especially in the workplace. As CEO of Delta Dental Ins., where women make up nearly 70% of our workforce, fostering an environment where women can comfortably share their menopause stories motivated me to share mine. In my piece for Fast Company, I shed some light on my experience with menopause and encourage my fellow women and leaders to have open conversations about this important life stage. So, tell me: what’s your menopause story?   Follow my story in Fast Company: https://bit.ly/49zPrLB #ShareYourStory #Menopause #BreakTheStigma #Leadership

Sarah, wonderful you are bringing more attention to this 'natural' part of being a woman. Reinforces the need for more focus & attention on women's health AND holistic approaches to wellness at any age. We are more than just a few hormones, which most GYNs focus on. The complete body shift is important to understand. I am grateful to have been able to use HRT, as well as incorporate other nutritional, physical and mental health regimens with an emphasis on 'self-care'. It's not been an easy journey, and candidly the whole aging process is not fun. It takes a team of people/support to put it all together. Within ourselves we have to remain vigilant and trust our internal voice, which then leads us to continue to speak up to our providers and employers, as appropriate. Honor yourself first and foremost! 🤗

Hi, Sarah! It's incredibly refreshing to see menopause being discussed openly in the workplace. I appreciate that you're leading this conversation and asking for our stories. Menopause impacts so many of us at work, but we don't talk about it. Sharing our experiences can create a more supportive and understanding environment for everyone. My menopause story, like many, is filled with ups and downs. It taught me the importance of communication, self-care, and seeking support. It's about navigating through change, not just physically but emotionally and professionally too. Encouraging discussions like this is SO important. It helps in breaking down the barriers and making menopause less of a taboo topic at work. Thank you again for shining a light on this and making it easier for others to share their stories.

Thank you for so openly sharing your story and experience. We need to be having this conversation, and it’s one I’m stepping into without embarrassment or shame. I’m lucky in that I have a wonderful PCP who heard my concerns and symptoms and provided options and ideas. One of my symptoms is tendinitis in my hip, not uncommon for Women of a Certain Age. When I went to the orthopedist and saw a youngish male PA, I shared my symptoms and research (validated by my PCP) only to have him give me a blank stare and redirect our conversation. I felt … invisible. I won’t let that happen again. (Thankfully I did get treatment and am on the mend.) Again, thank you for leading by example!

I appear to be in the minority, as someone who did not experience any of the numerous and oftentimes debilitating symptoms of menopause - not something I've sought to share. However as a Dental Hygienist I need to put my hand up to say, I have not regularly enquired about oral symptoms for this patient group. Occasionally patients will mention ''dry' or burning' mouth symptoms, which will spark the conversation. As a profession we require to increase our knowledge and communication skills in this area. The oral cavity is a dynamic environment which requires increased self-care and support at different stages of our life - not just at different points of the day. Thanks sharing the research and your own experience Sarah

Thank you Sarah for candidly sharing your personal experience on this season of life that so many of us women struggle through, oftentimes mostly alone and in silence because we’ve been told it’s not an appropriate workplace topic. I feel extremely fortunate to have a leader, teammates, and a workplace that is supportive about life and health transitions including menopause 💚

I love this so much. My wife went to her Dr and asked him so many intelligent questions looking for help on symptoms and trying to figure out what to do. He literally only talked about hot flashes. We need to do better talking about menopause ! Thank you for sharing this!

I speak openly about how menopause impacts me at work. The effects of menopause were a total shock to me — no one told me what to expect. I feel a responsibility to our younger generations to tell them what happens so they aren’t blindsided. So glad we are having this conversation. Thank you, Sarah.
