As a publicist, I often find myself in a familiar scenario where my family doesn't quite grasp the intricacies of what I do. While they may equate it to marketing or advertising, there's actually a distinct difference that sets public relations apart. Let's break it down: Advertising & Marketing: This is when CEOs, founders, or thought leaders tout their own horn, declaring their product, book, or knowledge as groundbreaking. It's essentially a self-promotional effort. Earned Media: On the other hand, earned media is when outlets like CNN, CBS, or Forbes recognize your product, book, or knowledge as groundbreaking and share it with the world. This third-party validation carries immense weight. Why does this matter? Because when it comes to consumers, they're more likely to trust a feature about you or your brand from a reputable source like Forbes than paid advertising or sponsored content from influencers.
