Publications are alive and well. Years ago when I was in hospital marketing, every magazine, annual report, employee and physician newsletter, and pamphlet was printed and mailed. (Yes, I may be dating myself.) When I started my freelance writing business over 12 years ago, hospital publications and communications were still in the print age but slowly moving digital. I braced myself for these publication projects to eventually disappear from my plate. Yet, here we are in 2023. This year alone I wrote four issues of a hospital community magazine, a nursing annual report, an association annual report, a service line capability publication, and contributed articles for hospital employee and provider newsletters, not to mention developed countless patient and consumer education pieces. All of these publications and materials were printed. Some were mailed. All were also available to readers online. The point? Publications are alive and thriving, especially in healthcare where storytelling is a critical part of a comprehensive communications strategy. Perhaps the format has changed over the years but telling the inspiring stories of survival, advancements in technology, healthcare delivery, policy, innovation, and achievement does not go out of style. You can work through the progression of a single project 4. There's an adrenaline rush with those tighter deadlines 5. The sense of autonomy is profound I've been incredibly grateful to be able to dip my toes into the medical communications world at an agency. Reputation management services go beyond responding to the digital footprint others have created for you online through their reviews. Current and potential patients really respond to seeing a medical professional sharing the latest studies on TV or providing important medical information in a newspaper or magazine article.📺 And when I say respond, I don't mean just liking and commenting on a post on social media. I mean, they pick up the phone and make an appointment.📞 My periodontist (client) was featured on a Channel 10 segment. The next morning, a woman called and stated she was scheduling an appointment because he must be the "best periodontist in Miami." Now that's reputation management on steroids. My dream 💗 is for every word written in healthcare to be strategically crafted so it actually makes a difference. No one has time to digest content that is too long, inaccessible or unfocused. If we’re honest, no one has time to write it either. But organisations keep on publishing lots of words about intangible things that most people don't want to read. Here’s how it happens: the person doing the writing starts from their perspective. That's it. They say: ‘Here’s what we know/think/did.’ If you're lucky, they also say ‘Here’s what we want you to do about it.’ But they don’t know much about who *you* are, so the whole thing’s a bit one-sided. People who work with me are often surprised that we approach things from the opposite end. Together we'll ask: ‘What’s the problem we want to fix?' and 'Who do we need to get on board?’ Then we’ll dig up everything we can about those people, until we understand exactly what to say to them, and how to say it. Using this approach feels great, because it actually comes up with the goods. If you're expecting a catch – more time or budget, let’s say – well, there isn’t one. That’s because investing in that little bit of thinking upfront saves hours of agonising rewrites further down the line.
