In the Celtic traditions of my ancestors, Beltane (aka May Day) is celebrated as one of the four quarter day festivals and celebrates the return of fertility of the land. It’s synchronistic timing that last week I landed in the fertile pastures of Heal the Earth Farm in Tennessee for the One Step Closer (OSC) Spring Member Retreat. With the generous time and wisdom of Jordan Rubin, Kristie Cerutti, farm manager Todd Vincent, and the farm team, we got a glimpse into what a regenerative farm system can look like and how it can feed into the inextricable bond between human and ecological health. Together with Lara Jackle Dickinson, we designed a journey that would hopefully lead our members towards stronger orientation towards relationships: to self, to purpose, to community, and to planet. We asked the question, how does place inform our purpose? We played with varying perspectives of what, who, and where feel central to the essence of our organizations, and explored how we might cultivate stronger ties between them. Some revelations emerged and of course many more questions — a reminder that the work of tending fertile soils is never ending. As I continue to integrate my own experience as both participant and retreat co-facilitator, I am sitting with what relationship means to me. As both a farmer and community weaver, what is my relationship and purpose in broader movements and systems? How do I know I am acting from a developmental place vs. perpetuating ruptured discourse and in-fighting? What I do know is that without relationship to our shared needs and a more relational culture, we're leaving our best solutions to die on the vine. Regeneration in the most basic sense starts from within, in my opinion. Getting folks on the land, engaging with farmers and land stewards, and committing to the learning and unlearning processes are key ingredients to starting that journey. Immense thanks to our members for trusting in the experience, excited to continue co-creating with you all! Thank you Sarah, Kristie Cerutti and the whole Ancient Nutrition crew for welcoming us into a very special place with healing, inspiring vibrations. Sarah expertly wove the farming and community threads into a greater tapestry of self inquiry and shared purpose. This experience was a reminder of the importance of place. And taking time to truly be in a place together, sharing, connecting and communing with natural systems.
