The stats reveal 90% of organizations fail to execute strategy, and just 14% of employees understand it. So, what can we do?
Firstly, we must put people at the core of our thinking. We can't expect to create a strategy at the top and assume the many employees below will execute it flawlessly.
Secondly, we must recognize there's often a gap between C-suite assumptions and the realities of the many people on-the-ground, also known as the 'activation abyss'.
Thirdly, we can consider strategy activation and the activation curve which bridges the gap, recognizing the role people play in successful strategy execution, and the need for the C-suite to bring people on the journey:
𝟭/ 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆
At this very early point, people need to hear the new strategy, understand its necessity, and see why the new strategy is better than the old strategy.
𝟮/ 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆
Here, people need to truly believe in the strategy and have the opportunity to internalize it. People need to be supported with opportunities to acquire new skills, and also opportunities to apply new skills and behaviours.
𝟯/ 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆
This is where strategy becomes truly integrated in the daily work of people. They become passionate advocates, role models for the desired culture, and feedback loops are present to enable this to happen.
You see, strategy is not just about creation, or execution, it's very much about people. Strategy needs activation, strategy needs people.
