Jeremy Myerson is a changemaker in the world of #health and #equity #design. As an Emeritus at The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design of the Royal College of Art and now Director of WORKTECH Academy, Myerson has recently turned his attention to investigating and transforming the #futureofwork. And I just learned that he has a new book out with co-author Philip Ross that I can't wait to read: Unworking: The Reinvention of the Modern Office! Per Myerson, in this RCA piece, "...we discuss the need to unlearn certain fixed ideas about work and workplace. We define the term ‘unworking’ as ‘unravelling how we work, unbundling the assumptions that are baked into the modern office, and unlearning the habits, management styles and workplace cultures that have traditionally defined our behaviour at work’." In this article and in the book, Myerson (with Ross, in the book) highlights the importance of design driven by #experience rather than process, #inclusivity over efficiency, and #data rather than dumb/nothing. He also emphasizes the need for #creativity and #strategy to curate better environments, motivate occupants, and realize change #atwork. I'm always game for work that promotes #intentionalpraxis and #gooddesign that's good for people, business, and the environment. This certainly is likely to be an interesting read!

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 is where people work, innovate and bring ideas to life be it home office or on the road. It happens in the workplace but also from other locations. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 of a space determines how that happens, most commonly in the office but also in other locations. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 of the workplace brings it all to life through real time connection to bridge the team from anywhere and create synergies. Creating actual workplaces that are technologically enabled and also can be adapted, rearranged and repurposed immediately to create different settings has been a great strategy recently. It helps bring a new dynamic where the physical workplace can act as a hub to strengthen the social aspect and become a hub for bonding, teamwork and  for innovation while connecting immediately with those who are remote and providing the right tools for real time interaction and innovation. Fewer fixed positions and rooms and more dynamic rearrangement of space to adapt to whatever the day or week brings. Have you tried this approach? Lets talk about friction. On Thursday at the first Workshape event everyone had to grind their own coffee and make it themselves… Only problem is a lot of folks don’t know how to do that. While inconvenient it forced some of us to take our time and help eachother and make coffee (and conversation). That little bit of morning interaction set everyone up for a day of open conversation and helped folks quickly reveal some facts about themselves. As Brian rightly pointed out at the wrap up of the day, that was positive friction that led to us interacting more. There’s definitely negative frictions we want to remove in the days we design (whether product or physical space). But moments of friction that trigger interaction can be super positive. Something to think about as we design the future of physical, and digital workspace. #workplace #hybridwork #futureofwork #design
