Recovery of the body of missing hiker on the Otter Trail South African National Parks (SANParks) regrets to inform the public that the body of the missing hiker on the Otter Trail in the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park has been recovered. The hiker was reported missing by his hiking group after he went ahead during their hike and was last seen at approximately 13:00 on the second last day of the trail. He did not arrive at the last overnight hut. SANParks Rangers, joined by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), began a search yesterday around 15:43 despite unfavourable weather conditions, large swells and swollen rivers. By nightfall, there was no sign of the missing man. The search resumed at first light today with the support of SAPS and Police Search and Rescue teams. Unfortunately, the hiker was found deceased: https://buff.ly/3xRWdyM

When you remove fire from fire-mediated ecosystems you create conditions that not only have negative ecological consequences, but also have the potential to support incredibly dangerous wildfire conditions. We have known for decades now that fire suppression and the shift towards homogenous forested landscapes have increased the risk of large-scale wildfires, but a combination of lack of will to address the issue, lack of capacity and funds, and the ever present disregard of expert opinion continue to write the narrative.

In my book Dark Days at Noon The Future of Fire, Dave Smith, the now retired fire and vegetation specialist for Jasper National Park confessed that he had nightmares about a fire, dangerous enough to force the evacuation of the park.....The day has come unfortunately. https://lnkd.in/gkGgR8wP

Drones/new tech – public speaker & trainer *Practical reality & myth-slaying *Big picture, long-term *Connecting dots & feisty individuals, globally *4 decades preparation for a job I didn’t know would exist.
This, 'allegedly', is immutable fact. And it has been going on at least since the early 1990s right across northern Australia. In some regions more frequently than others. Of the 247 fires over the 3 months, almost all would have been deliberately lit. In this region the only way fires start naturally is thunderstorms (firelighting storms are rare between Feb & Aug/Sept), or on rare occasions via sunlight concentrating on a bottle on top of dry grass (but never in the cooler months). That just leaves accidental fires due to poor campfire/BBQ management, or sparks from vehicles or welders - again, not especially common in this region (& hay combustion is a rare thing here too). Re the complaint about 'everyone else shouldn't be tarred with the same brush' - absolutely - but here's the thing, unless a group steps up and self polices, all will be viewed in a bad light. Because people who aren't part of the solution are part of the problem - whatever industry problem or community issues it is. For example - neighbours and others often know when there is an irrigation water thief in their midst. Not doing anything or saying anything to anybody allows it to continue, often for years. Then when they are found out, anti-farmer zealots paint all farmers as environmental vandals. Each year countless thousands of northern bush and rangelands are incinerated by deliberately lit dry season hot fires - millions of native species killed. And it is NOT pastoralists who are lighting these fires. But there is virtually complete silence in Australia's southern media. Well done Alys Marshall for writing an honest story. It takes courage to do this when our national broadcaster is hellbent on churning out romantic myths and turning a blind eye to unflattering issues that don't suit the preferred narrative. #conservation #bushfires #arson https://lnkd.in/gnQy_6Pd
