clavicle A clavicle fracture is a break in the collarbone, one of the main bones in the shoulder. This type of fracture is fairly common, accounting for about 5% of all adult fractures. Most clavicle fractures occur when a fall onto the shoulder or an outstretched arm puts enough pressure on the bone that it snaps or breaks. A broken collarbone can be very painful and can make it hard to move your arm. Many clavicle fractures can be treated by wearing a sling to keep the arm and shoulder from moving while the bone heals. With some clavicle fractures, however, the pieces of bone move far out of place when the injury occurs. What is proprioception? Simply put, it is the body's awareness of its movement and position. After experiencing recurrent shoulder dislocations, PJ underwent surgery to address the issue. Following the procedure, he teamed up with physical therapist Junae at our Hull Street location to strengthen his shoulder. During their sessions, Junae noticed PJ's proprioception was not quite right. Proprioception is very important; it's like a GPS for your body. For instance, if you extend your arm and close your eyes, you should still know where your hand is. But when proprioception is off, it can be hard to locate your hand without looking. Together, Junae and PJ focused not only on shoulder strength, but also on improving his proprioception and overall body awareness. By doing so, they aimed to reduce the likelihood of future dislocations and enhance PJ's post-surgery recovery. Range Specific Biofeedback There is occasional instances in the lead up to a surgery, or post injury, where we will need to restrict our athletes in a range of motion brace to allow sufficient healing. This can span variable timeframes, sometimes up to 6-8 weeks. But what's important to know, is that there is plenty to be done during this time, and we rarely advocate rest. In this example, we take Sofia through range specific isometrics on the VALD Performance ForceFrame while she is in a locked brace allowing her MCL to heal. The insights and biofeedback drives intent, and this allows her not only to maintain some aspect of quadricep loading/stimulus, but also allows her to prep her patellar tendon for her upcoming ACL Reconstruction. #education #VALD #ORKA
