This serves as a reminder to business executives and leaders to ensure that their core business is excelling, healthy, well-positioned to move forward and sustain success before being distracted by the next shiny new lure(s) to cross their path. Despite frequent layoffs, and sizable stock buybacks since emerging from bankruptcy and executing an IPO, GM’s stock, and global market share performance has been disappointing. There was so much optimism, hope, such high expectations for GM when it emerged from that taxpayer supported bankruptcy, and executed its successful IPO over a decade ago. I think it is fair to say that it has been a disappointment to many since then. Healthy, strong, successful, leading companies do not depend on regular layoffs, restructurings, stock-buybacks, to support their stock price. They grow sales, they grow market share, they grow profits and margins, they grow return on investment and assets, they innovate, they evolve the state of their category, industry, and brand(s). And, when they don’t, the senior leadership is held accountable.
