Volume Up!!! Listen to that jingle. This is one of, if not, the most iconic commercial from my childhood. Of course it had two power house brands Michael Jordan and Gatorade. As I watch it, I think how can the concepts in this video be used to #sell. 1) The world is copycat. Not to many people or organizations led the pack the way MJ, Air Jordan, or His Airness did. He drinks Gatorade. 2) Knowing how great he was, it sells #futures. I want to be like Mike. Mike drinks Gatorade. I want Gatorade. 3) The emotion used in this video is A+: fun, kids, upbeat music, laughing, smiling, etc. are all positive. I want to be there. Sidebar: This is like PRIME nowadays for those who have kids. I want to be like Logan Paul, I want PRIME. Well...my kids do. So when you look at the three main concepts used in this advertisement 1) copycat 2) futures 3) emotion How can they be leveraged when prospecting and talking with current or future customers? E.g. Framework of how to implement this. So and so is doing this (#copycat). MJ, the best to do it, drinks Gatorade He's a winner earning all sorts of accolades, you want to be like him. #futures What would those outcomes mean: fun, easy, positive, etc. #emotion. Weaving these concepts into my stories when #selling or really talking to anyone is like a cheat code for #winning . #sales #marketing

The other day The Daily by Outdoor Retailer reported that Black Diamond Equipment is going to proactively reduce it's sku count, put climbing at the center of everything it does and work to get smaller in an effort to find their way back to growth. This is kind of a incredible news. A common refrain on THE ROCK FIGHT (an outdoor podcast that aims for the head) is how we need to make less stuff and use the stuff we do make a lot longer. I often come down hard on line expansions or 'me-too' products that are revenue opportunities wrapped up in environmental greenwashing or breakthrough innovations. So when a brand publicly says 'we're going to make less stuff' it's cause for high fives. Because even before we know how this all shakes out just saying it is an important step. Also a special high five to BD owner Clarus Corporation for supporting this move. When they acquired BD you can bet it wasn't solely because they were fans of BD's product or thought they were badass. They also likely thought that BD would print money for them. Plenty of other owners would have just punted on BD or shut it down entirely. I'll have more to say on this on next Monday's episode of THE ROCK FIGHT.
