Unlike classical computers that use bits as the smallest unit of information, quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits. These qubits are often based on atoms, ions, photons, or electrons, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously, thanks to a phenomenon known as superposition. Scientists have created a new, ultra-pure form of silicon that could be the foundation for powerful quantum computers. This new form of silicon could overcome challenges faced by current quantum computers, such as qubit noise and decoherence. The researchers believe that silicon-based qubits could be manufactured more easily and scaled to a million qubits, which is necessary for quantum computers to outperform classical computers.
