…such a substantive conversation today with TWC President Kimberly Churches, aimed at amplifying the connection and collaboration between Miami Dade College (MDC) and The Washington Center (TWC). For over a decade, The Honors College at Miami Dade College students and other scholars, with the mentorship of our world class professors, have travelled to the Capitol to participate in the immersive Inside Washington convening of engaged learners, faculty, and public/private sector officials. We’re laser focused on expanding opportunities for MDC students to engage first hand in peer interactions, internships, and other career-connected environments. #BeMDC #StudentsFirst #studentsuccess #careerconnections #publicpolicy

A direct quote from the NACE Position statement: "Particularly troubling, NACE research has also found that all college students are not equitably represented in internships (Inequity in Internships, NACE, 2021). According to survey data, women, Black, Hispanic, and first-generation students were underrepresented in paid internships. In 2022, NACE followed up on that initial analysis and the internship data from 187 employers demonstrated nearly identical inequities. Again, women, Black, and Hispanic students were significantly underrepresented as a proportion of paid interns. Taken together, the research shows that white, male, and continuing generation students are disproportionally overrepresented in paid internships. Providing more paid internships for underrepresented populations will lead to greater access, opportunity, and success for participating students; help fill critical roles throughout the employment landscape; and lead to needed diversification of the workforce." Internships are a high-impact practice that colleges and universities should be paying significant attention to and identifying action steps to close equity gaps.
NACE Director of Research and Public Policy Mary Gatta recently spoke with NPR and WBUR's Here & Now about our position statement advocating for all internships to be paid and the actions we believe Congress must take to make this a reality. https://ow.ly/j4oJ50Pq5HK

Make a difference this Giving Tuesday! As a first-generation college student, I was fortunate to receive support from many. As you reflect on your lived experience, I suspect you also benefited from the kindness of another. This Giving Tuesday, I’m asking you to join me by going to https://lnkd.in/de4vhBs5 to Pay It Forward. Think about the third-year college student navigating internship costs, the single-parent dealing with unexpected medical expenses, or the first-generation student with a disability striving to complete college. Each of these stories is real, and together, we can help make their journey a little easier. Together, our collective generosity will help students pursuing their dreams by providing the financial support they need to focus on their studies. Go to https://lnkd.in/de4vhBs5 and PAY IT FORWARD.

Insights of Interns: Julia DeAngelis ’24 Major: Business Administration Organization: UWSP Office of Admissions and Recruitment - Stevens Point, Wis. Title: Admissions Intern What I did: I aided in the organization and updating of office procedures. I assisted in the planning and confirmation of events for prospective students. I worked along side professional staff to improve daily operations and programming. What I liked: I enjoyed getting a deeper look into higher education and the role admissions plays in a university. I also really enjoyed the creative aspects of event planning and coordination. Future Dream Job: Still figuring that out! #uwspinterns #sentryschoolinterns

For the Spring 2024 semester, CPF POSC 395 Policy Research Internship students explored how eminent domain affected communities in south Los Angeles, especially Black communities within California’s 37th Congressional district. Students examined its impacts on land ownership, generational wealth, and community prosperity. They presented their extensive research and recommendations to our partner, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove. Sofia Connors, a sophomore majoring in Political Science, said, "I was grateful to take part in the POSC 395 Policy Research Internship. I learned about the ways the government has historically used eminent domain to target minority communities in Los Angeles, segregating them and gentrifying their communities. This internship taught me about the foundations Los Angeles was built upon, that many fail to acknowledge. It is rewarding to know we could be making an impact on policy, potentially getting reparations for the countless Black families displaced by eminent domain and had their homes taken." A huge shout out to Sofia Connors, Sydney Crowley, Christian Haro, Juan Herdoiza, and Bright Lee for your outstanding work on this project! Higher Education Executive Leader | Transforming lives through Higher Education | Lifting student and staff voices while fostering welcoming and inclusive campus communities
I am so happy to meet with our students — whether it’s 2 or 12 or 20:— to learn about their Cougar Experience, what we do well, and areas we could do better. Today we spent quite a bit of time on internships. #GoCoogs #studentaffairs #studentsuccess #highereducation #studentvoice
Dr. Daniel Maxwell, our Associate VC/VP of Student Affairs, hosted “Donuts with Dr. Dan” session with his fellow colleagues Dr. Monica Thompson, Executive Director of University Career Services and Dr. Anne Dayton, Director of the Cougar Initiative to Engage (CITE). The students shared their perspectives about internship opportunities and their cougar experience. The conversation was insightful, affirming, and filled with helpful feedback on the students experiences at UH. Thanks for coming out to chat, Coogs! HBCU courses often emphasize community engagement, leadership, and social justice, fostering a strong sense of cultural identity and pride among students. The curriculum typically includes general education requirements, major-specific courses, and opportunities for research, internships, and experiential learning. HBCUs are known for their supportive environments, smaller class sizes, and faculty dedicated to student success and mentorship. This unique combination helps students achieve academic excellence while preparing them for professional careers and civic involvement. 1.833.364.3422 (1.833.3NID-HCA)

Black History and HBCU Talent! LISC is partnering with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) on an internship program that builds a diverse talent pipeline for CDFIs while offering paid professional experience to diverse undergraduate students of color. Learn more about the LISC HBCU Internship Program at https://lnkd.in/eZn3RTwG. View the link below to learn more about Sabrina Mohamed's internship experience!
Sabrina Mohamed, a senior at #HBCU Howard University, recently completed a 9-month paid internship with LISC, made possible by the support of the Citi Foundation. In this role, the political science major worked closely with LISC program experts to organize a small business development convening, conduct research on community violence intervention, and evaluate applicants for child care grants, among other projects. The work experience gave Mohamed a real taste of what it takes to make a positive impact on communities. “My favorite part was seeing how different local offices and communities had different approaches to similar issues. It really just emphasizes how important it is for us to support local initiatives.” Although her internship is over, Mohamed can still lean on LISC for support. She and other exiting HBCU interns now have access to an employment coach who can help fine-tune their resume writing, interviewing, and networking skills to find jobs in community development when they graduate. Now, that’s a great way to cultivate a diverse talent pipeline for our industry!
