Speech: "Summer camps are very important because it's an opportunity to gather students from around the state that are deaf and hard of hearing and bringing them to one location so that they can see and learn from peers. For vocational rehab, it's really that opportunity for us to work with a large number of students at one time. And being able to, just dedicate all of our resources for one week or however long you have a camp, is just a wonderful thing. Being able to bring in different students who've already gone to college, that can come and come back and talk about their experiences, bringing in faculty, bringing in our staff that have different expertise and working with these students. “We've seen such growth in these students from the time they step on campus to the time they leave. Just being able to, again, just learn from other students--knowing that they're not the only student out there. Playing video games may protect children from neurodevelopmental disorders A study published in Npj Science of Learning found that preschoolers at risk for developmental dyslexia showed significant improvement in phonemic awareness after playing “Space Invaders Extreme 2.” The children in the study played for 45 minutes a day, four times a week, for over 1.5 months. The recent decision by the United Nations General Assembly to designate June 11 as the #InternationalDayofPlay is a significant occasion that deserves our attention and celebration. This is a global accent of the fundamental right of child to play. Play and recreation are essential components of a child's growth journey. Research tells us that play fosters creativity, imagination, self-confidence, and various skills across physical, social, cognitive, communication, and emotional domains. Organisations like The LEGO Foundation the LEGO Group and VVOB among others deserve special credit for contributing to the recognition of this important day and championing #PlayMatters. Reflecting on my own experiences, I recall how exciting my primary school days were, particularly at St. Augustine's Demonstration School in Butiiti. The school leaders were intentional by making play not just a break from academics but a powerful tool for learning and growth. Whether it was building structures with paper cuttings, immersing ourselves in imaginative role-play scenarios or collaboratively solving puzzles, every activity was a gateway to deeper understanding and discovery. Play strengthened the bond between the teachers and us students. It nurtured mutual respect and a sense of camaraderie that enhanced the overall learning experience. I can still remember the zeal with which we approached each day, eager to learn and explore through play. 𝐴𝑠 𝑎 𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑑, 𝐼 𝑤𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑚𝑖𝑠𝑠 𝑠𝑐ℎ𝑜𝑜𝑙 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑦. As we celebrate the recognition of the #InternationalDayofPlay, it is crucial to reaffirm the importance of integrating play into #education. Play is about enhancing academics through joyful and meaningful experiences. Let us advocate for policies and practices that prioritize play-based learning, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in an environment that celebrates the play.
