Next week (June 6!) I am doing an AMA with Sharebird on Competitive Positioning. This one will be fun. I've worked in several ultra-competitive markets and others that were more niche-focused. I've also had the birdseye view of markets forming as a CMO Analyst at IDC. On top of that I've been fortunate to learn and work with people like Paula Catoira Richard Sharp James Thomas Mindy Regnell Brian Kardon & Nipul Chokshi (among others!) who each brought a unique perspective on how to take on Market Intelligence and position your company in these markets. A few truths I believe: 1) Competitive positioning is useless without strong enablement (PS: I appreciate you Carly Christensen!) 2) CI and MI is a team sport, one person cannot own it solely, particularly in competitive markets there must be feedback loops. 3) You should try as hard as possible to tie your competitive work to revenue metrics.
