Building a supercomputer on wheels . Modern cars are packed full of electronics. Managing all the computers and assistance systems is a complex task, and the cable harnesses increase the weight of the car. In the joint research project CeCaS, Fraunhofer researchers are working on a systems architecture based on the idea of managing all electronic components centrally from one computer platform. #TechTrends #TechInnovationsDaily #DigitalFrontiers #FutureTechInsights

This discussion was reminiscent of Makimoto's Wave, which describes the industry swinging between 'standardisation' and 'customisation' (and you can frame customisation in a number of ways, e.g. domain specific architectures). The Von Neumann architecture survives as it still works in many use cases; many people have been trained on it, and lots of tools have been developed to support it. What is interesting though, is that as the variety of use cases increases, influencing architectural approaches, we now have a corresponding increase in the variety of memories. We are still in the early days of in-memory and near/at-memory computing, accompanied by a flowering of new structures and materials. And with them come new challenges. Putting aside the important technical attributes (retention time, immunity to disturbance, scalability, etc), the two primary parameters to bear in mind are a) bit cost, and b) compatibility with fab process flows and materials. #dram #sram #semiconductors #ai https://lnkd.in/eBw46RYC

'Leading-edge transistors are already transitioning from the fin field-effect transistor (FinFET) architecture to nanosheets. The ultimate goal is to stack two devices atop each other in a CFET configuration. The forksheet may be an intermediary step on the way An in-between transistor called the forksheet might keep circuits shrinking without quite as much work. The idea for the forksheet came from exploring the limits of the nanosheet architecture, says Julien Ryckaert, the vice president for logic technologies at Imec.'' " https://lnkd.in/gtKPHyzU

"As modern vehicles rely increasingly on electronically controlled and software-defined functions, the typical domain-based electrical architecture that dedicates a control unit for each is giving way to a zonal approach. The domain approach, which groups functions by domain such as powertrain, chassis, and infotainment, has driven a rapid increase in the number of ECUs on board the vehicle as well as increased wiring complexity. The zonal approach, where ECUs are classified according to their location in the vehicle, contains a centralized communication gateway and compute module sized to handle workloads from multiple ECUs within the vehicle. It gives the opportunity to reduce the number of ECUs and simplify the wiring, permitting space savings and reduced vehicle weight." #automotiveindustry https://lnkd.in/eKsWEgc6
