Author Ann Howell, in her article, “It’s Okay to Put Your Dream Job on Hold,” writes that accepting your situation during a crisis is not a sign of weakness. On the contrary, the discomfort you feel during such moments is transient. You will move through it. You’re not powerless. She also adds that in such moments, “what you need to do to move forward will not always be what you want to do in the moment.” Sometimes you will need to make tough decisions that don’t align with your initial plans, but a crisis doesn’t have to define your whole life. You can reframe your thoughts and remind yourself that “sometimes it’s enough to know that you are stabilizing your situation and putting yourself in a position to pursue a bigger, better opportunity down the line.” #mentalhealthmonth #selfcare

THIS CAN HELP YOU TO ACCOMPLISH TASKS EASILY If I held you at gunpoint and demanded 50 pushups to release you? Without an iota of hesitation, you’d hammer out those adrenaline-fueled reps in a blink. That’s a “snap” trigger — a spark that ignites a need to do something. Such a trigger vaporizes trivial thoughts and channelizes your scattered focus into a searing laser beam. The shame and self-loathing after relapsing on a 70+ day NoFap streak snapped me into action. Rage. Vengeance. Shame. Frustration. Anguish. Retribution. Fear. Motivation. Love. Desire. Inspiration. Ambition. Annoyance. Any reason that evokes powerful emotion(s) is a snap trigger. Positive is best, but negative fuel is potent as well. As “rational” as we think we are, we’re emotional and instinctive — our brains still run the same OS our mammoth-hunting ancestors had. But relying on emotional states or external events for snap triggers isn’t reliable.

Good professionals support you only as long as you give them something. & Bad professionals support you until you become good.

Love this! This applies to communication leaders supporting the professional development of their team members as much as it does an individual contemplating what support is going to be most helpful for a given situation. I think as an #IABC member I have been lucky to develop relationships that cover both: need to vent or break down a problem? There's a connection for that. Need someone to encourage the next step? Someone for that too. And as someone who provides coaching and mentoring to comms professionals at all stages of their development this is a great shorthand for when to listen and when to question. Are you looking for recognition and validation of a situation, or are you looking for advice? These can be very different conversations.
