Australia's GP Crisis - defining the problem and finding ways forward It's getting harder to find a GP in Australia. Only 1 in 6 young doctors are becoming GPs. Many GPs are abandoning bulk-billing due to rising costs and red tape. Australians are increasingly having to resort to public hospital emergency departments to deal with straightforward medical problems. The Australian Doctors Federation is preparing a very important podcast on this topic that affects every Australian. What are the elements that contribute to this crisis? What is the role of government? What is the role of the public? And could GPs and the medical profession at large being doing more to resolve this? Our Chair will be joined by two of Australia's most senior and respected GPs, Professor Mukesh Haikerwal AC and Professor Karen Price in a fearless and far reaching discussion about the state of General Practice in Australia. Professor Karen Price is the former President of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, a practice owner and co-creator of GPs Down Under. Professor Mukesh Haikerwal AC is a former President of the AMA, former Chair of the World Medical Association and practice owner. Release date will be mid-August.

Why do we believe we are not getting the right answers from our doctor? A study in the Tel Aviv Medical Center examined the phenomenon of perceived information quality and availability after realizing that in the hospital, many patients (and their family) felt they were not getting answers — even though the doctors and the medical staff felt that they (the staff) provide them (the patients and family members) with lots of information via interaction in the hospital, by phone, email, at the bedside and in formal letters. The data from the hospital showed a gap between what the staff were doing and patients/family members prevalent perception that are not getting good enough information from the hospital staff. The study uncovered that when patients do have a face-to-face meeting with a doctor in the quiet of the office, they almost always feel that they have been given valuable information, even if they are unhappy with the answers or want to seek a second opinion. A zoom session is not a replacement for face-to-face interaction with a patient. The key seems to be the setting of how the information is provided and not the quality or essence of the information itself.

Check out the latest issue of Ontario Medical Association's Ontario Medical Review, which features an interview with our CEO, Dr. Mohamed Alarakhia, on the benefits of adopting and scaling a centralized eReferral system across the province. It's one solution that can address the growing burden of unnecessary administrative work for doctors; it can also improve information sharing between family doctors and specialists, and has been shown to reduce wait times.
