Dr. Samantha Barry reporting for duty! Thank you @ulsteruni for this immense distinction of an honorary doctorate alongside the other 2024 alumni Mary Robinson @patrickielty @oliverjeffers . During my speech in Belfast, I talked about a daily practice my mom instilled in us from an early age- being kind to yourself and staying nice things out loud about yourself! “There is something quite Irish about batting away a compliment, diminishing your work, sharing the credit, generally underplaying what you’ve done big and small. I urge you NOT to do that. Be your biggest cheerleader, even if at times it feels a little forced. Get up in the morning, look in the mirror and say something nice about yourself. Some days will be easier than others, some days you will struggle to be positive, but find something, even if that thing is “My eyebrows are looking great today”. You will never speak to anyone more than you speak to yourselves in your thoughts. So make those thoughts kind! “

"This isn't vanity, its sanity." Thank you for the speech and yes to first being kind to ourselves makes it easier to be kind to each other

There really is something so Irish about diminishing compliments and achievements... this resonated a lot. Thanks for your inspiring words and this great reminder.
