Practicing helps find the gaps ahead of the event.
FEMA Region 10 Administrator Willie Nunn and Alaska Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Management Director Bryan Fisher share their thoughts about this week’s Alaska Rehearsal of Concept. State and federal agencies, non-profits, and the private sector took part in the three-day exercise held at the Dena'ina Center in Anchorage. With a focus on the last tactical mile in the aftermath of an earthquake, conversations revolved on how to move critical life saving resources to specific locations in communities for survivors to access.

Almost one year ago, on February 6, 2023, devastating #earthquakes shook parts of #Türkiye and #Syria, claiming the lives of nearly 60,000 people in total and leaving countless others severely injured. We immediately mobilized an emergency relief team and, through joint efforts with our partner organizations, provided crucial medical care and support to those affected. Our efforts extended beyond medical assistance and included the distribution of essential resources such as water, food, diesel, tents and aid packages. The journey to recovery has been long and for many it remains ongoing, even to this day. As we approach the one-year mark of this tragic event, we stand unwaveringly by the side of those still grappling with its aftermath. Stay tuned for updates on our aid efforts in Türkiye and Syria, as we reflect on the progress made, the challenges faced, and our ongoing commitment to supporting the affected communities. I want to share some of what I learned in my shelter training for the Red Cross today and some current information about the effort to provide shelter to all displaced people after the devastation in Maui. I find it staggering that within 24 hours of the fire, multiple shelters full of resources arrived on two islands. Most people are aware of the Red Cross, but not as many understand much about this vital organization. Founded in Switzerland in 1866, it came to the US in 1881. There are 249 locations in the US alone. It's mind blowing to me that they receive no federal or state funding. They are 90%+ volunteer driven. The DRO (Disaster relief organization) currently is housing around 50 people in Honolulu, and closer to 1500 in Maui. There’s around 400 people sheltering in Maui High School and 900 at the War Memorial. They hope to open a new shelter at the Lahaina Civic Center today. This is going to be a long haul for Maui 'Ohana. Client first sheltering is a Red Cross priority. Red Cross provides shelter, water, food and many services to all who enter. Any breathing human who agrees to not bring weapons, alcohol or drugs is welcome. They work to help every single client, thousands of people, to find longer term solutions, filling the urgent great need while other forms of support come online. It’s staffed by people who care enough to serve and offer their time. The great need right now is on Maui, not O’ahu. They have hundreds of staff on the ground there but will need more over time. In many cases, clients can shelter outdoors and still receive access to food, bathrooms, and services. Inside the shelter you receive 40ft2 of personal space and a cot. It’s not comfortable, but it is full of people who deeply care. Anyone who can pass a background check and take a training can join the staff. If you go a bit further, you can qualify as a disaster services worker who can deploy into any crisis nationwide. As we live in a time defined by increasing frequency and intensity of crises, I feel it is far better to prepare to serve those who are affected than to live in fear. I highly recommend anyone already on Maui to support the organized Red Cross response (do not fly to Maui if you are not there), and anyone elsewhere, consider pursuing engagement for the inevitable future crises your communities will likely face in advance of great need, as Maui is experiencing now. It’s a rare thing to find such compassionate service in the world. But disasters can also bring out the very best of humanity – to care for others in need. In addition to the many other excellent community organizations, I strongly urge people to consider donating money and time to the Red Cross to support their efforts. My heart goes out to all those who have been affected by the fires, especially the Lahaina community. Aloha Aina, Aloha Akua, Aloha Kanaka. Mahalo. https://lnkd.in/gUhRDRss #mauifires

The United States depends on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to take action when disaster strikes. In 2017 alone, FEMA supported 59 major disaster declarations, 16 emergency declarations, and 62 Fire Management Assistance Grant declarations across 35 states, tribes, and territories. Civilians throughout our Nation depend upon quick action from FEMA when they need help, and FEMA deploys the first responders they need to come to their rescue. https://shorturl.at/ajlsH
