Very emotional here! After 10 years of work by so many teams, we have started our clinical trial of adult RPE stem cells for dry AMD. Many of you might know my Mum had AMD, I can’t help but think how excited she would have been to know we are testing a cell therapy, thank you family! My husband Jeff Stern and I are so grateful to all involved over the years, since our first publication describing this stem cell in 2012 https://lnkd.in/gitwEShK, through pre-clinical animal studies https://lnkd.in/g63Wvzg7 and all the work to develop clinical grade manufacturing in collaboration with Timothy Blenkinsop at Mt. Sinai, we are finally in the clinic! Enormous thanks to our Neural Stem Cell Institute scientists, Brigitte Arduini, Jade Bola, Tom Kiehl, Carol Charniga, Sue Borden, Missy Campbell, Cindy Butler and Tasha Rugenstein, to the team at Cedars Sinai Biomanufacturing Center who manufactured the investigational product and to the KELLOGG EYE CENTER team, with lead surgeon Rajesh Rao, MD, for transplanting the cells and continuing the hard work of monitoring outcome in this early phase study.
