It's easy to feel despair about higher ed if you treat Harvard as a stand-in for every university. Truth is, most universities are not the Harvards of this world. In fact, there's a huge swath of universities that are part of the "land-grant" system, and their mission explicitly includes not-for-profit public service. On Thursday, Feb 29, a luminary of the land-grant university network, President Waded Cruzado of Montana State University-Bozeman, will help me lead a free webinar about how workplaces can honor diversity of viewpoint and heal divisions along the way. Because that's exactly what her institution is doing. You don't have to be in higher ed to join us. If you're in K12 ed, business, government, or nonprofit work, you're welcome. Register: https://lnkd.in/gQ4Z4k9D. Meanwhile, get to know the awesomeness that is Dr. Cruzado...👇🏽 Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) Jeffrey Breneman Mark Becker Jeff Lieberson Jean Middleton, CMP Michelle Szechenyi Amanda Tropiano Robin Parent Allison Gerrard Flor Vega-Castillo Melissa Wysocki Mackenzie Spence, M.Ed. The Moral Courage team has worked with a lot of college and university leaders over the years. Hands-down, among the most visionary is Dr. Waded Cruzado, President of Montana State University-Bozeman. If we had just two words to describe her style, it would be "No B.S." (Note to our fellow nerds: When spelled out, "B.S”. is one word, ok? 😉) Having a no-B.S. leadership approach doesn't mean being curt or cruel. It means showing both the strength *and* humility to ask for what you need from those who follow you. Which is what Dr. Cruzado recently did when the culture wars broke out among a small but vocal group on campus. In an email to the university community, she expressed exquisite vulnerability: "I am asking for your help: Let's gift each other our grace and acceptance. No matter what we see on the exterior, each person bears their own unique burden as best they can. Likewise, each person -- every single one -- carries gifts and talents that broaden our understanding, deepen our wisdom and enrich our daily lives. Let's keep focusing on those diverse gifts and let's keep choosing to help each other." In just those few words, President Cruzado reminded the quiet majority that they don't have to play the either/or game of culture warriors; they can literally change the game by making different choices. And by addressing the vast silent swath, President Cruzado achieved something more. Any idea what that might be? Put your thoughts in the comments. Then register for the free webinar that President Cruzado and our founder, Irshad Manji, will be leading on Thursday, Feb 29, at 2 pm ET: https://lnkd.in/gcWcwnkR. #CampusUnity #HigherEd #BeMoralCourage #StudentLife #CampusLife #MontanaStateUniversity Allison Gerrard Alison Harmon Ariel Donohue Tracy Ellig Flor Vega-Castillo Mackenzie Spence, M.Ed. Here's a quote from our Community Report with the Denver Journal of Education and Community (DJEC): "I think like a lot of it for me is just realizing that my life to date is success to me. Like high school me would be so proud of the person that I am today. And I think like it’s just important to recognize like how far we all come and the success that we’ve already made for ourselves". The polarization we are seeing (and reading about) today on many college and university campuses seems to have increased dramatically in the last few years. Why is that? How did we get here? What if the polarization cannot be reversed? What if the governance constructs that exist (and have existed for generations) precisely to bring ideas and people together to work toward productive outcomes cannot function as intended? What if the external pressures are so great that radical (rather than incremental) change is needed and needed quickly? And what if the faculty-administration dynamic has become paralyzed? I dive into these questions and more in my article in Forbes (May 2023). #highered #collegesanduniversities #postpandemic #leadership #governance #changemanagement #disruption #adaptation #innovation

American macro/geopolitical analyst, investor, & strategic advisor. (My opinions often change over time. Please do your own research. I don’t post investment advice & only accept connection requests from people I know.)
It should be obvious by now… “#DEI” — & the larger “#Woke” Mania — is not about progress; it’s not about supporting what is good or right; it’s a grab for power. DEI is #Marxism in drag. It’s undermining the productivity of American schools & businesses & it’s dividing & weakening the greatest liberal constitutional republic the world has ever known. Whatever happened to the great American Melting Pot? The America of my youth wasn’t perfect; but we not only used to believe in freedom & tolerance — we defended these ideals in our words & actions. Again, not perfectly; but show me a society in human history that has done it better. I think a majority of us still believe in freedom & tolerance & the American way, but — as was common in Russia, Eastern Europe, & China during the #Communist Revolutions of the 20th century — a silent majority are too scared to speak & too subject to coercion of “true believers”. Like many Americans, you may be tempted to dismiss anti-woke & anti-DEI criticism as hysteria or even bigotry. But I would encourage you to rethink those knee-jerk assumptions. Take the time to read the classic Communist texts & review the political rhetoric from Communist movements over the last 100 years. The continuity of ideas have shocked me & will shock you. Chris Powers is right & I admire him for saying it: once you see it, you can’t unsee it. To ignore the corrosive, hateful, power hungry Woke Revolution is to abandon the possibility of a free, tolerant, & vibrant America & to discard the hopes & dreams of future generations. It only takes one weak generation to forfeit it all. I should also note that while mainstream media & culture often frame Wokism as a righteous movement of progress & describe its opponents as intolerant fascists, that’s just framing to advance a hostile & intolerant agenda. It should be obvious by now that revolutionaries took over the commanding heights of American media years ago. In reality, the destructive nature of the Woke Revolution really is NOT a partisan issue. Americans who have managed to keep their wits about them on both sides of the political spectrum recognize & acknowledge the danger despite the risks of censorship & professional cancelation. How dare we presume to think for ourselves & to defend our rights & values as citizens of a once free & tolerant society! On that note, here are two brilliant take-downs of the Woke Mania by left-wing commentator Bill Maher... https://lnkd.in/gHw4WfMG … & conservative anti-Communist/anti-woke commentator James Lindsay. https://lnkd.in/gVAfQ5Bw
What you saw yesterday from Harvard, MIT, and Penn is pure evil disguised as "diversity, equity, and inclusion." It's all bullshit. If they say this to Congress, can you imagine what's going on behind closed doors? It doesn't stop at these 3 universities (that also manage a collective $100B in endowments). This type of leadership is starting to land at major corporations and institutions nationwide. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. Wake up.

"Effective change requires robust leadership and support across the organization. Yet, this is just the beginning. To navigate change successfully, a coalition of influential individuals is essential. They must draw power from diverse sources, work cohesively, maintain urgency, and underscore the need for change." - Falecia D. Williams during #DHL2023. This month we host our second Tuckwell Senior Scholar Symposium at Mount Stromlo. The Symposium is an opportunity for our third, forth and fifth year Tuckwell Scholars to have an away-day focussed on the transition from univeristy. We realised that we have a lot of scaffolding in place for ANU Tuckwell Scholarship recipients as they transition from high school and into the program (e.g. Buddies, Orientation, Camp, Commencement and First Year Experience Program), but much less support as they transition out. One of the reasons for this is because each cohort shares a single start date, but their end dates and graduation dates will vary considerably (we support Scholars financially for up to 5 years, meaning some graduate after 3 years, and others after 5). Knowing this, we are now working with our third, fourth and fifth year Scholars to ensure they are supported as they make decisions about their futures, and are provided with opportunities to hear from experts, professionals 5-10 years out of university, as well as Tuckwell Alumni. I am very excited that this year we are offering a Strengths Profile report for Scholars from Cappfinity, and that Penny N., ANU Senior Consultant – Leadership, Culture and Employee Experience will lead the debrief of the report. #ourANU #futureleaders #tuckwellscholarship #leadershipinaction
