Over the past year I have noticed a few things that really stuck out when it comes to my logistics role. 1. Brokers need shippers more than they need us. READ THAT AGAIN! * I am not saying brokers do not add value to a company's success- I am simply saying that they have more than enough options to sift through to find a partner. 2. Prospecting is not for the faint of heart. Rejection will come and it will show no mercy. It doesn't care how profitable you are, how well you dress, how well you articulate...it will humble you fast! 3. The small things matter, and are often overlooked when you focus on customer retention or trying to acquire new business. A simple voicemail before you go to bed, providing an update goes a long way! Lastly, keep it simple! There were numerous occasions where I caught myself complicating my own process and ultimately doing TOO much. Transportation managers & CXO's get 10-20 solicitations per day from brokers. Here's why those numbers may be even higher right now. Some carriers are in the hole, big time, & are leaning on sales to pick up the slack. The # of solicitations you receive from an individual is likely due to enforced demands from higher ups. So, where am I going with this? 👇 You, the transportation manager, can tell the health of 'X' brokerage and sales requirements of 'X' brokerage by the number of solicitations you get. Go to your inbox & type in someone's email. 1. Getting multiple emails from them daily, weekly? ➡ UNHEALTHY 2. Does this sound familiar to you as a shipper? - Sales Rep promises they’re better without explaining how they’re different than the other calls the take from 3PLs. - Sales Rep quotes a load at a suspiciously low rate. - You award the load to pick up next day, only to find it will take 3-5 business days for a credit line to potentially be established. - You prepay for the load, only for the Sales Rep to tell you that their coverage team can’t find a truck for the quoted rate. - You agree to pay more for the load, the load picks up, but your Sales Rep can’t provide a delivery ETA because the coverage team refuses to prioritize this type of communication. - The load delivers two days late, with zero communication to you letting you know to be prepared for delivery. - Your Sales Rep can’t send you the POD you ask for, because the coverage team refuses to prioritize this type of communication.
