Dutch cycling culture could not exist without the enormous amount of planning and investment into safe infrastructure. Contrary to the typical development patterns, the quality of this infrastructure doesn’t diminish the further you get from the centre of town. It is the opposite. The cycling infrastructure in urban periphery areas offers greater safety protection from high speed, busy roads. It connects suburbs and town centers. It means you can realistically (and safely!) escort a class of kids along a highway and over a railway line for a gardening class. Important lesson for transport authorities and urban planners/designers in many places.

Within the context of the current Local Government elections here, it would be interesting to see if any candidates out there are even within the same frame as Clover Moore AO when it comes to actually supporting roll out of significant active mobility measures and understanding its value in the growth of a city?

Too many people biking in downtown TO are now doing so with complete lawlessness and recklessness. They pose a danger to themselves, pedestrians, motorists, and other cyclists. I see people biking against traffic on large streets. Biking in the wrong direction in one-way bikelanes (especially the revised Adelaide bike lane). Biking on the sidewalk, sometimes right beside a protected bike lane. Riding through red lights on busy streets. And often with high-powered electric bikes. This kind of utter recklessness makes all cyclists look bad and destroys popular support for building better cycling infrastructure. If this is you: stop it. I won't pretend to be someone who's always biked in perfect accordance with the law. But there's a difference between minor infractions and complete disregard for the rules of, and valid concerns of others on, the road. I have been working with other members of Community Bikeways since 2018 to make cycling in Toronto safer. I'm not happy to have to add 'lawless cyclists' to our list of issues to have to deal with. #cycling #toronto #transportation

I wish there are more advocate for this type of life-style and urban development in the US.
