You never forget the very first team you ever worked with. If you’re lucky like me, it will be a fond memory. Because it’s a strong team that made an unforgettable impact on your career. When I was 21-year-old Engineering graduate, I joined Procter & Gamble Philippines as a Management Trainee. I became a full-fledged manager at 22. After a number of promotions and spending 9 years in the Philippines, P&G launched my expat career and posted me to 4 other countries. This is a photo of the first team that nurtured me and helped me grow. I recently met them when I visited the Philippines. Yes, we are still in touch, despite the decades that have passed by. Some people in this team were my bosses. Some were my peers. Some reported to me. I learned so much from this team of legends that prepared me for my expat career: ↳ My HR fundamentals ↳ Leading with influence ↳ Managing stakeholders ↳ Having a dual P&G career ↳ Leading a team and being a great manager ↳ Working with people from different functions ↳ Being a mother, wife and full-time career woman The climb to the top is very challenging. It’s competitive, and you get your share of callouses and scratches. Without those formative years of my career with this team, the climb would’ve been much harder. Upon achieving my MSc in International Management from Imperial College Business School, I'm now ready to open up about the darkest moments of my life. Attaining a grade beyond my expectations was something I never imagined. While it may not seem exceptional to some, for me, it surpasses what I ever deemed possible—a true blessing given my journey. This tumultuous path led me back to Malaysia. Looking back, feels like it was guided by something more significant and letting go once its lessons are learned. 🔔 Please read the attached slide where I shared my full journey! _________________________________________________________________________________ In September, I began my journey as a Management Trainee at L'Oréal MYSG. Here, it's a community that prioritizes the well-being of its team members above all else. During my brief tenure, I've been involved in some exciting projects, although I can't share the details yet. One memorable incident involved crafting an entire press release where I initially misunderstood my manager's instructions. Despite the initial hiccup, the press release was put to use, showcasing our work environment's supportive and adaptable nature. Certainly, working at L'Oréal Professionnel Paris has its challenges. Balancing various projects across Malaysian and Singaporean markets might seem similar on the surface, but navigating their unique nuances has been an enlightening experience. These challenges contribute significantly to a sense of achievement and ongoing learning. L'Oréal has significantly reinforced my choice to return to Malaysia, amplifying the significance of my journey. It's a place where I can contribute meaningfully, fostering personal and professional growth. Being a part of L'Oréal MYSG brings me enjoyment, and I eagerly anticipate the future of this company. As I transition into this new career phase, I reflect on whether my decision to return was the best path. There will also be full of regrets for not fully immersing myself in the experiences during my master's, missing out on the vibrant connections and moments the UK offered. Yet, when I consider where I stand today, remaining there in the UK might have entailed a daunting job search and a worsening state of depression. Life is about give and take, right? Piece of advice: When supporting someone with mental health challenges, the weight of our words and actions matters. Consistency and sincerity build trust, especially when helping someone through mental health struggles. Don’t make someone’s life harder than it is! 😭 To those championing mental health support and standing by individuals battling these challenges – you're incredible! Keep spreading love and care; the world needs more compassionate souls like you, making a positive daily impact. Thank you, Indra W. Mid- Week Thoughts In today's fast-paced work environment, job security is no longer about loyalty—it's about adapting or being left behind. In my six years of experience in HR, I've encountered various HR functions and learned two key adaptive measures that have helped me thrive: 1. Swim or Sink: In 2017, I landed my first internship after graduating in 2014. I had to start on the same day that I was called in due to an emergency. The role at WaterAid Zambia, an INGO, required me to handle administration and procurement, areas that were completely new to me. To succeed, I had to quickly learn on the job, stay curious, and understand the role's requirements to improve my efficiency. 2. KAIZEN: After adopting the role, I learned the importance of the Japanese philosophy of continuous improvement. It's about making constant improvements for the better. This includes obtaining necessary certifications or qualifications as you gain more experience, which aligns with the Japanese business philosophy that focuses on processes that continuously improve operations and involve all stakeholders.

Congratulations to my daughter Chloe Looi for securing a much-coveted 12-month Digital Marketing Placement role at L'Oréal commencing July 2024, in their #London office! The #recruitment process was multi-step with online tests and assessments, leading to a whole day in-person interview with other shortlisted candidates. The interview itself was 3-part: - A group exercise to test leadership, teamwork and other skills. - A presentation by Chloe of her digital marketing strategy for a case study (given to them only 4 days before the interview) - A 45-min interview I am really proud of how much time and effort Chloe dedicated to researching and preparing for the case study presentation, about L’Oreal and the beauty industry and generally getting herself ready for the interview. I stopped working for 16 years because I made a conscious choice to personally bring up both my children. I’ve watched Chloe work hard on her studies and personal development over the years, with consistency and dedication, at The British International School of Kuala Lumpur, Oxford Sixth Form College and now The University of Bath As a mother working and living in Malaysia, I can only watch from afar with pride and excitement, as Chloe continues to grow and develop in England into a working adult and begin her career in digital marketing. Consistency is key. I am confident that Chloe will continue to give 100% to her studies and to all the roles and responsibilities that she take on. Keep shining, Chloe! It feels like just yesterday when I landed my Internship with Kimberly-Clark GBS APAC. I still remember being thrilled, nervous and excited all at once. I was pleasantly surprised to receive the warm welcome and support of my colleagues, mentors and Leaders in GBS APAC. At the end of my internship in 2018, when I was offered a permanent role, little did I know that this would be the start of an exciting journey for me. My journey began in the Order to Cash Team as an Associate. Within the next 2 years, Kimberly-Clark’s #Flexthatworks framework helped me pursue and successfully complete my ACCA certification. Drawing inspiration from Kimberly-Clark’s continuous evolution philosophy, I slowly began engaging myself in identifying and implementing improvement opportunities. One of the projects also earned me a prestigious Blue Belt certification. My passion for continuous improvement led me to volunteer to become a CI Advocate for the Credit & Collection Team. Fast forward to Q3 2020, I was given an opportunity to explore a different portfolio supporting Australia New Zealand (ANZ) - Customer Experience Team. I thoroughly enjoyed learning the new Claim Processes before another opportunity knocked. With the knowledge and experience acquired and the value created I was promoted to Analyst II, Customer Service Team. I continued to pursue my passion for continuous improvement and was awarded a Yellow Belt Certification for the project within customer service team. I was fortunate to learn the end-to-end Order To Cash Operations. In Oct last year my hard work, dedication and passion was recognized yet again and I was promoted to become an Analyst III. I was entrusted with leading a team to support the Australia New Zealand (ANZ) portfolio. It always is a rocky start in a new role but as I learn & get hold of the pace, I enjoy every day of it. I have been given the opportunity to add value and bring continuous improvement in every role I have held and am truly proud of my journey. @Kimberly-Clark is a great organization that provides employees like me a platform to learn and grow. Problem-solving: The most overlooked skill for success? 🤔 It's a vital skill for all of us, but particularly when you're a fresh graduate trying to impress that first employer. We've all been there, haven't we? Landing your first proper role can be a right challenge. You send out loads of applications and feel the pressure to stand out, especially when the economy's a bit rocky. Many of us can look back on our first jobs and bosses, wondering what really got us in the door. 🎤 My advice to my younger self (or any of the new generation out there): focus on solving real-world problems that add value to your boss and the company. Internships are all about tackling business problems. Companies hire interns to sort out everyday issues or even take on bigger challenges. They want that fresh perspective! I remember my biggest problem-solving project. It was figuring out why Malaysian shoppers were choosing premium baby formula over standard options for a leading FMCG company. This research formed the core of my Master's thesis and took a whole year to complete, but the effort was well worth it in the end! Landed myself three job offers because of it: Perfetti van Melle (big sweets company, they make Mentos), Johnson & Johnson, and Danone. 🙌 🏗 My advice to anyone out there, whether you've just graduated or have years under your belt: find those real-world problems and get them sorted. That's how you truly demonstrate your problem-solving prowess. Throwback: How I became an HR/P&O Professional... Upon completing a M.Sc. in Psychology, the real challenge was pinpointing where I envisioned myself working. University only partially prepares you for the 'real world'; a trainee program certainly does 😉 A new location, a new team, a new boss, and new tasks—every six months! It was challenging, but never learned more in such a short period, covering diverse scopes like HR Operations, HR Development, and the CHRO Office. The Talents National program with DB Schenker helped me identify my career path, my mentor and supervisors (Thanks, Axel, Anuschka and Özge 🙏🏻) guided me through corporate navigation. If you're just starting your career, here are my DO's: 1️⃣ Build a network to connect with other teams and business areas. 2️⃣ Try every task offered. If you discover it's not your passion, it was still worthwhile. 3️⃣ Be curious, ask questions, and take on projects you have no clue about (yet).
