Saira Rao’s Post

Lots of folks on here keep using the word “diverse.” Please stop. If you haven’t read the glossary in the back of me and Regina Jackson bestselling book WHITE WOMEN, please do. Many claim it’s their favorite part. Then join Regina and I at one of our book club events to break it all down. Next one is July 17th. Register here: https://lnkd.in/eWSqbByp

I have an issue with the term "neurodiversity" to isolate different-brained individuals from those who are self-styled as "neurotypical". It's a matter of numbers, to be fair. The majority of adults fall into the "neurotypical" category, whereas others have to be "diverse"? Come on. The argument above is a good one. "Diverse" is a way to "other" folks that aren't, primarily, white, male, etc. We need to overcome our primate savage hindbrain and recognize that fellow people are HUMAN BEINGS and that, within that narrow category of animal on this planet, we have quite a range of traits. But, at heart, we are all HUMAN. "Neurodiverse" should be cancelled. Instead, let's refer to people who aren't "neurotypical" as either "neurospicy" or "neurodifferent". Frankly, I think of them as "more fun" and "more trustworthy" and "more kind."

It's a simple observation. I don't think using the word diverse is innately malicious. The truth of the matter is that white people are a majority in this country. Most industries are in fact composed of a majority of Caucasian people. Stating the fact is not racist or exclusionary. It's just a fact. It just sounds like more liberal gardens goal post manipulation. You guys simply love eating each other alive. And to what avail you guys are constantly bickering about who's more righteous in their efforts of including every minority race there's nothing actually changing in the real lives and conflicts within the culture of most minorities, particularly African American culture. Most black people in this country are still very stupid, violent and without a moral compass. And if you want to argue that point, please come to the cities I've lived in. I'm pretty sure you'll change your mind real quick. Who fucking cares about the liberal jargon? What company or organization is more diverse.

My biggest pet peeve as a practitioner in this space! A person cannot be "diverse" 🤦🏽♀️ Referring to anyone who is not white as "diverse" reinforces otherness.

Couldn’t agree more. Diversity is dead. Long live inclusion (the harder part that people try to avoid because it’s too uncomfortable.)

100%! Language matters. White cannot be the default while everyone else is othered by the language of White supremacy. Terms like “diverse” also infer that “diverse” people, books, or initiatives are included at the pleasure/ discretion of White people. Also - Free Palestine and DRC and Sudan and so on. ♥️ Yemen Death to capitalism

💯 Saira Rao Here in Australia the words “ethnicity’ and ‘culturally diverse’ are used in the same way. Leaders of this country at every level centre whiteness. The othering of people of colour and newly arrived migrants continues while they continue to laud the success of ‘multiculturalism’.
