So, don’t just cruise through life; aim to be exceptional. Whether its school, work, business or whatever you’re into, be that person who stands out. Because when you do, the world takes notice, and opportunities line up at your doorstep. It’s not just about being book smart; it’s about being life smart. I've spoken to 30+ employers in the last 90 days and the ONE skill-gap they've all identified is RESILIENCE. This week I delivered a workshop to a group of THE most resilient young people I've ever met as part of GoodWork's onboarding programme. Some were care leavers, homeless, victims of domestic violence and all from low income backgrounds. These young people have gone through SO much and are living and breathing examples of true resilience... Yet are locked out of certain industries because due to no fault of their own don't have a degree or A-Levels. Resilience is a skill that's taught from life experience's not grades Don't be that employer that throws the words social mobility and D&I around but isn't willing to actually do the work or make a change. In the immortal words of Bon Jovi - “Woah, we’re halfway there…” Halfway through my secondment with Poppyscotland and what a four months it has been. Over those months, there have been many, many, many day… I’ve distilled them into one of the five different types. 1️⃣ a school day: with new areas of IG to learn about (enjoying raffles and regular giving), and reshaping my love of legacies. New techniques for DM, and different ways of working. 2️⃣ a planning day: planning my time to ensure that I can fit it all that is important, and moving aside the bits which I have absolutely ability to change or impact. 3️⃣ a reflection day: talking with those in my network about what I’ve learned, what’s gone well, what hasn’t, and what would I do differently next time… 4️⃣ a prioritising day: understanding that my priorities, really aren’t everyone else’s priorities, and that their priorities really aren’t mine too. With a little caring and sharing still gets the job done! 5️⃣ a “not today Satan” day. Enough said. I’m looking forward to a few more types of days, as I move into months 5, 6, 7 and 8 - there’s a another song on there somewhere….

There’s so many ways to be a good place to work or a good person to work for. But if we aren’t practicing this one thing, it’s impossible to be great. It’s imperative that we understand and practice the difference between Recognition and Appreciation. Recognition is focused on a persons achievements. Goodness, a world away, a lifetime ago – but oh what an experience to learn and analyse the ecosystem of an outstanding customer experience provider. From back of house, through the service line to front of house and the systems and procedures in between – I feel lucky to have had a taste of this glorious playground and how each and every touch-point can create a memorable moment! I remember writing a report about my time at Gleneagles – a study requirement to complete your practical. Not only was it reflective on my personal learnings there, but it was an observation about an ecosystem of care. Care for their customers, staff, the environment and wider community. The Hand me down crown. The upkeep of the crown by on hand to the next. Thanks to #Edgarchase and the chase family. Legacy holds immense importance as it is translated and passed down from one generation to the next. It encompasses the values, wisdom, accomplishments, and traditions that we leave behind. I serve a bridge between the past, present, and future. This allows us to connect with our ancestors, learn from their experiences, and understand our roots. By preserving and passing down our legacy, we ensure that the knowledge and lessons learned by previous generations continue to shape and guide us. It provides a sense of identity and belonging. It gives us a framework to understand who we are, where we come from, and the values that define us. It instills pride and heritage, fostering a deeper connection to our roots and a stronger sense of purpose. traditions, rituals, and customs are carried forward, preventing them from fading away. This preservation of cultural heritage allows future generations to learn about and appreciate their own heritage, fostering a sense of cultural diversity and understanding.

This Pride Month, every company wants you to think they're inclusive. But have you ever tried to actually *implement* a DEI program at a company? These folks have, and they're sharing the ups and downs, the wins and pitfalls, the good, the bad, and the rainbow-logo-ugly. The facilitator of this panel is one of my oldest friends, and someone who thinks deeply about diversity, equity, and inclusion every single day. She's a DEI trainer, a CEO, and a thoughtful human being with lived experiences that make this very close to her heart. She's gathered a panel of people who have put in the work to implement DEI programs at their companies and have a wealth of experience in actually making this happen. It's not an easy process, and it's not as simple as making your logo a rainbow for Pride Month or posting a black square in support of Black Lives Matter. It's also not a set-it-and-forget-it project. Learn from those who have been there about how to make the most of the process and implement a program that truly has an impact.
