Full transparency! In 2016, I became a charter school authorizer without knowing how to improve existing practices. Attending NACSA's Annual Conference in Georgia that year changed everything. Their sessions challenged old practices and sharpened my skills to promote equity and inclusion. Don't miss my chat with Veronica Brooks-Uy, NACSA Vice President, about her work on Diversifying the Profession: Closing the DEI in Authorizing. She's brilliant! #DiversityInclusion #EducationEquity #DEI #CharterSchools #Authorizing #CharterSchoolAuthorizing #HBCU #Authorizers #Podcast

We were thrilled to participate in the CalMatters Ideas Fest and Urban Institute’s Advancing Housing Justice Summit today! Here's a recap of our team's remarks at both: 1️⃣ Homelessness Solutions Panel (CalMatters): Margot Kushel MD highlighted the direct connection between housing affordability (housing costs vs. incomes) and homelessness, emphasizing that California is 1 million units short of the affordable housing we need. She also emphasized that the medical community knows how to help folks with complex behavioral health and substance use disorders stay well, but they can't do that without housing. Robynne Rose-Haymer, MEd emphasized the importance of trust and connections when it comes to addressing homelessness. She explained that many people are hesitant to move into a shelter when they don't know or trust the person offering the space. They're also hesitant to leave ➡️ relationships in their communities and ➡️ familiar bus routes to their doctors, services, and case managers. Uprooting people from encampments without establishing trust not only fails to build connections but also undermines the effectiveness of the billions of dollars we invest in homelessness services, says Robynne. Democratizing Research: Meaningfully Engaging People with Lived Experience (Urban) 2️⃣ Kara Young Ponder, PhD talked about ways to build tables at which researchers and lived experts can meaningfully collaborate. Organizations must be trauma-informed, compensate lived experts properly, and focus on building trust and community. Asking people to share expertise gained from difficult experiences should not be purely transactional - it's important to make time and space for people's feelings and experiences. She also emphasized the importance of using accurate and inclusive language when referring to one another and the ways we work together.
