Although the number of state government employees excluding those involved in the educational services field began to grow rapidly beginning in early 2023, so far this century the number of people working for state governments and state government agencies has remained relatively flat over the decades, with an increase of only 73,200 (2.66% overall) since January 2001. The number of state government employees who work for educational institutions, on the other hand, has increased by 417,800 / 21.28% during the same time frame. Like their non-educational brethren, state government employees working in various seasonal educational services field also saw a significant jump in new hires beginning in early 2023. patreon.com/mikeodonnell

500,000. That's the gaping number of teacher vacancies we're facing next year. And that's not even the whole picture. It doesn't include emergency certified teachers. It doesn't factor in long-term subs hastily recruited to fill the void. Imagine millions of eager students who will start the school year without a dedicated teacher. They'll arrive bright-eyed, ready to learn, and be met with an empty desk. The stand-in could be a long-term sub, void of the content knowledge needed for these students. This can't continue. Simultaneously, we're overburdening the teachers we still have. Some juggle upwards of 300 students a year. To teach, grade, and guide them on their learning journey. This load? It's causing burnout. More teachers are leaving the space. It's time we innovate. It's time we harness technologies like Proximity Learning to ensure stable, quality education. Students need access to real teachers. Here's an interesting phenomenon: parents are impressed with low turn-over rates on school campuses. Parents feel a sense of safety/security and trust when they know the staff, teachers, and administrators in the building. Empirical data from educational research supports the hypothesis that teacher/faculty/admin stability is correlated to improved student outcomes. Yet, every summer we witness the exodus and migration of many seasoned educators. One definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Instead of recruiting external teachers/faculty/admin, let us shift our priorities to retaining, REWARDING ($$$), and promoting our existing staff with a proven record of excellence.
