Yesterday, I had the opportunity to sit alongside a group of diverse changemakers and listen to their collective knowledge and shared wisdom. On the topic of belonging, our goal was to essentially humanize systems of care across the board. I found myself trying to make sense of my thoughts by writing them out. “negative predictable outcomes = institutional responses. How do we break that down?.” Our youth in systems who are living the predictable (also preventable) outcomes are met with institutional responses in all sectors and systems. Grappling with the question - how do we humanize systems for all? How do we bring the table and chairs to the youth who are living the negative predictable outcomes in partnership to foster belonging and a sense of care/compassion?

A lot of schools and other organizations have adopted #socialemotionallearning as an equity initiative. But it's not an equity initiative. And it's actually an inequity-inducing initiative if any part of it is about giving people skills to survive injustice or other inhumane treatment within the organization. It's also an inequity initiative if it starts with the presumption that we have to fix something about people based on experiences they've had outside our organizations while we ignore wellbeing-deteriorating conditions inside our organizations. #SEL #socialemotionalskills #fixinjusticenotkids

Most fields, ranging from social work to education and public health, operate from a "deficits-oriented" position. This means we tend to see clients, patients, students, etc. as people with essentially just problems and needs. Think about our incessant references in reports and articles to people as "disenfranchised," "underserved," "disadvantaged," and the like. While well-intentioned, this tendency biases us towards seeing people only in terms of their weaknesses and flaws, rather than their capacity and talents. Very rarely do we consider "what works" in these populations and what can be amplified via intervention. Being "strengths-based" makes us begin to look beyond some of the weaknesses or “deficits” that people have - this allows us to consider and engage people in a more balanced and equitable way. #strengthsbased #culturalhumility #equity #inclusion Learn more at humilitycenter.org.

On the one hand, we're told that it's rude to interfere but on the other hand, what happens if you don't speak up? We're taught from a young age that 'It's not our business.' So, often, we'll step back when things just aren't right. As we heard from police officer Simone Taplin at our latest Courageous Women event, #community intervention can make a huge difference. Reporting the 'argy bargy' that's going on next door, knowing that it's happened often, could save lives. Powerful, emotional, insightful and uplifting, are all words that describe the energy in the room as Simone was speaking. With not just one expert in the room, (our speaker Jolene Ellat), but also Yvonne Kallane, Ph.D., MAICD and Dr Jane Lorrimar, PhD. the conversation was stellar, with people who really know their stuff. So what's changed in recent years and what needs to change? I'm no expert, but can only reflect on my own experience when I felt very isolated and alone. 1. We know that early intervention is vital so get over that idea of 'Interfering'. #Community matters. Be the voice in your community. 2. Police will respond to community concerns and when a victim calls in, they won't be 'outed'. That's so important to know and may save a great deal of heartache. I truly think that knowing it's not acceptable to raise your hand to your partner - knowing that the community is watching, could have turned my relationship around. 3. Police often take perpetrators away from the home and the family are left in a safe place. 4. WA, has the Breathing Space programme with perpetrator accommodation and intensive support in Perth and also in Port Hedland. The South West region of WA are hoping to have one soon. What's happening in your neighbourhood? 5. Education is key to understanding what's happening in our society so get educated. Such a hard watch! I don’t think there are the words! I've read lots of comments today about the failings in the system, the unacceptable behaviours, the need for better inspection regimes, and the questions about how this can be allowed to happen. I fully agree with all of them. However, when we boil it down, let’s not forget this is about how one human is treating another human being! Sadly, this will not be the only example. To all the wonderful role models and care providers out there who, in my opinion, are not anywhere near well enough compensated for the vital role they play—thank you for doing an incredible job. According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, what should be included in the priority areas of civil society organizations' work? According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, civil society organizations should prioritize working on the following areas: Physiological Needs: Addressing basic human needs such as food, water, shelter, and healthcare to ensure that individuals' fundamental survival needs are met. Safety Needs: Creating a safe and secure environment by addressing issues related to personal safety, access to justice, and protection from violence or harm. Love/Belonging Needs: Promoting social connections, community engagement, and a sense of belonging, as well as addressing social issues like discrimination, isolation, and loneliness. Esteem Needs: Supporting individuals in developing self-esteem, confidence, and a sense of achievement. This can be achieved by empowering people to improve their skills, access education, and participate in meaningful activities. Self-Actualization: Fostering personal growth and fulfillment, enabling individuals to reach their full potential and engage in activities that bring a sense of purpose and self-realization. Civil society organizations play a crucial role in addressing these different levels of needs in society. By focusing on these priority areas, they can contribute to the well-being and development of individuals and communities, ultimately leading to a more inclusive and thriving society.
