Recent sanctions placed on Russian oil tankers and their owners has had a limited effect as nearly 80% of Russian oil exports are estimated to bypass the #G7 oil price cap. As the cap nears its second anniversary, the size of Russia's shadow fleet now numbers 591 tankers, an increase of 33% since early 2023. Overall, more than 1,200 tankers are involved in the transportation of Russian oil, making up 24% of the global tanker fleet, with 10% of these ships classified as shadow vessels. As regulatory scrutiny continues to grow in this sector an understanding of owners, flags and vessels involved in this activity is crucially important for risk and compliance purposes.
